Various tweets from BobbyMac, Mirtle, etc. that the NY Islanders will be moving to Barclays Arena after their lease expires on Long Island at the end of 2014 season.

Where is Barclays Arena, and is it any good?

Quite possibly the best in North America: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barclays_Center

Would be huge for the Isles in terms of profits. Wouldn't surprise me if they instantly rocketed up there as one of the most profitable teams.

Thanks for that - wow, looks very nice. Although it looks like the Islanders would be moving to Brooklyn in that scenario.

How huge would that be for the league? Has there ever been a team in Brooklyn?

The Barclay's Center wasn't designed for hockey, so the sight lines aren't the greatest for hockey apparently.

That being said, this should massively improve the Islanders revenue stream.

Yeah, it wasn't really designed for hockey. Check out the asymmetrical seating when there's an ice sheet in:

Given that it only seats 14,500 I really wonder how much revenue they'll be able to generate. Definitely more than their current arena, but there's going to be a real limit on what they can bring in due to the low capacity and the number of prime seats that are missing.

Under 15,000 seats and in New York? That'll make our tickets look cheap.

They must be making up for the lack of seating with added luxury boxes.

Will they keep the name Islanders? It would be inappropriate but the Lakers kept their name when they moved to LA. Even if they did, I don't think they'd keep the logo with a picture of Long Island on it. It will be interesting to see what happens. Brookyln Brooklyners?

I would imagine it would be hard to rename a team with such a storied history.

I'm not so sure. The key demographic (19-35) can only remember the Islanders being a punch line, it might be time to move on.

I saw some tweets referenced on the Islanders board that the NHL told them they have to keep the name. So, nothing's changing. Also, Brookyln is technically on Long Island so I guess it still works.

I think the name is fine, but I'll be very surprised if they don't change their logo. They'll definitely want to try and make the team more hip to appeal to a casual audience.

John Davidson hired by CBJ as president of hockey operations. Dang, I wanted us to get him if possible. Pressure on Howson?

Psyched that the Isles are moving to Brooklyn. Nassau Coliseum is decrepit and near impossible to get to without a car. Will be interesting to see what they do with the open end of their horseshoe seating.

As for a new logo, I have no faith in the NYI's ability to choose a suitable replacement:

yeesh.

Incidentally, also not a big fan of the Nets new duds. Its design strikes me as generic and forgettable... put it this way, if there was a basketball movie where the story takes place in a fictional professional league because they weren't granted permission to use the NBA, the Brooklyn Nets jersey would be worn by one of the throwaway teams that the protagonists beat during their winning streak montage, if that makes sense.

I guess it's sort of taboo... but Schultz looks like a sure-fire #1 d-prospect.
