It's the 20 year anniversary of the Lindros Trade, and NHL.com has a fairly lengthy article with a ton of quotes from the guys involved. It was a pretty interesting read. Figured I would post it up.

Eric Lindros was perhaps the most heralded junior-hockey player in history -- at just 18 years old, he was 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds. With a blend of dominant skill and overwhelming size and strength, many had pegged him as the next great NHL superstar, following closely in the footsteps of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

Taken by the Quebec Nordiques with the first pick of the 1991 NHL Draft, Lindros resisted signing with the club. He spent the 1991-92 season playing junior hockey and skating for Canada at the 1992 World Junior Championship and the 1992 Olympics. Lindros reiterated to the Nordiques that he would play outside the NHL in 1992-93 and re-enter the draft in 1993.

Faced with the option of losing Lindros with no compensation, the Nordiques began entertaining offers for Lindros' rights, with the culmination of that effort set for the 1992 NHL Draft in Montreal.

June 20, 1992 marked one of the stranger days in NHL history: Just prior to the start of the draft, the Nordiques twice traded Lindros' rights -- first to the Philadelphia Flyers then to the New York Rangers.

Brindamour did not get traded because of a feud, it was a pure hockey move.

The rumor was that lindros slept with brindamours wife but it is the biggest piece of trash ever. It never happened.

Sound familiar? Didn't it come out a couple yrs back that Carter had slept with Hartnell's wife or something.

There have been countless versions of the same rumor around virtually every team -- including the "Player C was so mad he punched out player A in the locker room when he found A was sleeping with B's wife" variation -- for decades. The internet age just made the stories circulate sooner, further and linger for many more years.

With few exceptions, the stories are almost always total fabrications.

At any rate, getting back to the original topic, Adam did a great job with the article series. Jay Greenberg's Full Spectrum book has even more on how the trade evolved and what other trade packages for Lindros were discussed right up until the end.

I enjoyed reading it. Lindros was by far and away my favorite Flyer, yet I was no where near old enough to understand the full scope of what was going on at the time. Seeing the story unfold as told by the people that lived through it is pretty awesome.

Agreed, one because the size of players has grown so much that 6'4" 230 isn't as much of a behemoth anymore. And two not many guys that are that huge are forwards and have the skillset Eric possessed. Until we see somebody that's like 6'8" 300 that can skate, hit and have generational talent-like abilities at the forward position. It'll never happen again.
