I've yet to see Cowen cause a shred of trouble for anybody other than those in the opposing team's uniforms.

As long as they don't expire on the same day, we'll be ok... It's when it comes to Cowen/Turris that you have to worry...

Always follow the Detroit motto.

Sign your 3 forwards, 3 best defense man and build from there.

Cowen and Karlsson will be 2 of the best players on this team, not just in defense perspective. Both will be attained, no worries.

I don't really see a problem with Chara's demands.

He was the best defenceman in the league at the time and wanted top dollars.

He got it from Boston and has a Cup ring.

It just sucks that he had to put up his worst playoff performance in his career during his contract year. (yes, it was all in the wrist)

I bet Chara would have gotten a cup ring in 2007, but that's behind us now.

Ah, that would have been nice to see.

Pronger vs. Chara.

This is ultimately the salient post here, as Manked pointed out.

We needed the cap space for Heatley and Spezza.

With the Redden/Chara debacle, wasn't the reason we could only keep one was because we were anticipating even more big contracts coming up over the next couple years with Heatley/Spezza/Alfie/Emery/Phillips all really soon needing newals?

Where as today, the cap is super high, we don't actually have that many stars/rookies that're gonna be looking for big raises so getting both Cowen and Karlsson on big contracts isn't competeing with any other stars' contracts on our team.

Ever since the situation in Buffalo with Drury and Briere leaving, combined with overpaying the last top line star player they had(Vanek), these NHL teams know to lock the stars up before it gets to that point.

If the star player wants an extra 4-5 million on a long term deal, its better than ending up with an overpaid Carlo Colaiacovo.

How has no one brought up the most obvious answer to this.

(Muckler's idiocy aside) It's a lot easier to sign your 2 franchise defencemen to long term deals with a 55-65 million Cap versus a 42.5 million Cap

That's what everyone is talking about with reference to Heatley and Spezza.

If Cowen gets to the point where we have to actually ask which one we should keep, I would be THRILLED.

Keep both because Cowen will not be near as expensive as Chara and Karlsson will be worth what hes paid
