Barkov is a large center showing off his tremendous talent in the SML, dominating other MEN in the face-off circle and in front of the net at 18. You do not get that presence from Nathan Mackinnon, who is a phenomenal athlete, no matter what you do. Get another version of elite skill in a big man.
Think about it this way: Would you like to attack an opponent in the same manner over an over again (and be regularly successful because we'd be damn good at it) or attack in a variety of ways complicating defensive responsibility. It is tactically important to have a varied attack. If we have three VERY GOOD NHL players in Hall, Yakupov and Mackinnon that attack in relatively the same manner and play a similar style we are hampering ourselves.
I have no problems taking Barkov if Nathan MacKinnon is not there.

I don't mind Jones but not ahead of MacKinnon or Barkov. I believe championship teams have elite centres. 1 elite centre does not do it because of injuries. You need 2 of them. Look at Pitt, LA, Det, etc... The dcore is fine with a bunch of #2dmen.

I'm sorry, but as far as I know Stamkos or Crosby are not draft eligible for next year.

Yeah... nice try with the 2003 1st round pick. The Wings didn't have one! Unless he meant 2nd aka Jimmy Howard.

Letang, Doughty, Lidstrom.

Don't know where you're trying to go with this. If anything, this shows you don't need elite wingers, of which you potentially have 3.

If it's random, I would expect one of the teams with 3 weighted lottery balls, to win the lottery. The Jets, Hurricanes, Wild, Leafs, Blue Jackets, Flames or the Stars.

If that's what happens I sure hope Toronto ends up with the 1st overall pick.

You just provided an example of how stupid drafting for need is. The Oilers have plenty of D prospects of Finn's caliber so they drafted for need, we don't really have any prospects like Moroz. Most Oilers fans hated the pick at the time, looks stupid doesn't it?

That being said, comparing drafted for need with a top 5 pick and a 2nd rounder shows how little hockey knowledge you have.

I can't see the Oilers being a bottom 2 team again, but if they are of course they will take BPA.

I get the feeling they will be picking in the 6-10 range if they even play at all this season.

If a team like Columbus gets the top pick, there's likely nothing you coul offer to pass on Nathan.

I would actually hope for someone like NYI to get 1st if we didn't get it. Would help their marketing tremendously, with a guy touted to be the next Crosby, but probably is going to be top 5 C with Giroux, Crosby, Stamkos, Malkin. Stars would be my 3rd choice.

If Oil got 1st overall again.. somehow.. And they were picking Mackinnon, and Leafs got like 4th, I would offer JVR+Colborne+1st for RNH.

JVR-Mackinnon-Eberle
Hall-Gagner-Yakupov
Paajarvi-Lander-Jones

Schultz-Smid
Petry-Klefbom

Damn..

Possible 4th: Monahan, Barkov, Shinkaruk, Pulock, Lazar, or even trade it to VanCan for Schneider if they still didn't deal Luongo.

Phoenix will probably win the lottery due to their financial difficulties. Kind of like how Crosby was given to Pittsburgh when there was talk of them possibly moving.

Oilers would say no. They could just take MacKinnon and keep RNH. That would be an insane 1-2 punch down the middle.

Gagner could be traded or tried at 3C or winger.

I think they would just keep both

Hall - RNH - Eberle
Hemsky - Mackinnon - Yakupov

I would think they would definitely have to deal a winger eventually though for help in other areas or to stay under the cap (after elc's expire).

The Oilers sure wouldn't do that though..... And It would would be a hell of a lot more to get RNH.

Take in account that 1st would be Barkov/Jones/Monahan.
