Rochester is now in the centre of the cone.

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE

Good news is I live on a 2nd floor apartment. Gonna take a flood of biblical proportions to hurt me.

It's gonna rain. It's gonna be windy. I really don't think it's going to be THAT bad, but I'd stock up on a few things to be safe.

NHS guesstimates at this hour: 2 AM Tue central position is tentatively Philly/Wilmington; 2AM Thu Rochester.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, wind and a lot of rain. Probably flooding will be the biggest issue with this storm.

We're getting light rain from it today here where I live. Actually quite pleasant as we haven't had rain in a couple weeks. Temps in the upper 60s. Expecting light rain tomorrow too. Surfers are definitely enjoying the swells.

Good luck - I expect it will be a nuisance, but not a devastation. I can imagine certain districts may close school for a day to keep kids / buses off the roads, so make your child care plans now, if you need to.

Does anyone think political signs do anything?

I've been curious since I see them everywhere. I do my own research on all candidates, so they do little more than throw someone's name at me. My guess is that they maybe motivate more people to vote overall, but necessarily on behalf of any particular candidate/ballot measure.

There really isn't much research on the topic, unfortunately.

A. Fortunately, they irritate me less than political commercials.
B. Unfortunately, like commercials, they make me a little more apathetic / disdainful to the whole political process.

My hunch is in local races, where name recognition is an issue, it might help. How many people know who is running for city/town council or school board prior to showing up on election day? Pretty much the only reason the name sounds remotely familiar is likely because you saw a sign somewhere. So they end up drawing votes of "I heard of this guy, but not the other guy, so I'll vote for the name that sounds vaguely familiar." Often times the name is all you know about them (unless you are really civics tuned).

But like a Presidential election? No. I doubt that Romney/Obama signs actually make any difference.

My Squirt B team had a scrimmage today and my big guy was in goal.

5-0 win.

I got my kids Slushies to celebrate Brandon's shutout.

Yeah, the thing that kind of spurred it is the Washington State Governor's race. Based on what I've seen, one candidate has probably 70-80% of the signage and campaign spots on the radio and television and yet he's been losing / polling even for the entire race. (And the WA Governor's race has been close the past two elections so it's not like he's made up great ground in doing so.)

Makes it seems like the signs and spots aren't really worth much.

This flippin Hurricane is the 2nd largest since 1995. Tropical storm winds extend 520 miles from the center. It's also going to slow down and sit on our face for awhile.

That's what gets me nervous. The length of sustained 30 MPH+ winds and rain, not so much the strength or category. Also, adding that its been raining for 3 days prior making the ground saturated already....ugh.

Hold on to your butts.

The media calling this "The Perfect Storm" makes me wonder if it will growl like the movie. That would be awesome.

I recommend using bitbucket for having a remote location for your stuff. Works with git, Mercurial and some other VCS' software.

Well, I imagine that Sandy will keep me and other indoors soon enough, so posts could always see an upswing then.

Now as for that ***** named Sandy, bring it on! Subways, buses and commuter trains will be shut down here in an hour or so. Zone A (aka the low-lying, mostly coastal, areas; Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Red Hook, Rockaway, places immediately bordering East River) have been ordered to evacuate ahead of expected storm surges of 6-11 feet (not good news, as this was the high estimate meteorologists feared could lead to damaging floods).

Personally, we're at no risk of flood damage and our building has backup generators, so we'll likely just need to wait out the unusually lengthy storm and possibly some power outage; but hopefully the prep work by the city will prevent any lengthy transportation outages in the aftermath, as salt water can be corrosive to switch motors and other rail components.

Tropical storm-force winds now cover a diameter of 898mi! This is equal to the driving distance between NYC & Atlanta. #Sandy

^ And that's just ****ed up! ^

Be smart, be safe and prep.

The DC metro is closed all day tomorrow and I have the day off now. Have a feeling it'll be awhile before work starts back up again.
