What a sweet goal by Tatar to finish it in OT.

McCollum was certainly solid but let in that one soft goal he so usually does. But hey, two points.

Why is Mrazek down in the ECHL? Is it so that he can get more playing time or was he bad in camp?

Best game of the season thus far. I would assume Gus will eventually get the assist he deserves on the last one. McCollum played very well, I think it is time to go with McCollum and Mrazek going forward.

Very strong starts for Tatar and Nyquist.
Good start for Ferraro and Parkes

Andersson... what gives?

Also, what's going on on D that Nicastro, Fournier and Almquist are missing so much time? Injuries?

I would have thought playing time, but he is actually in a time share there because the Hawks have a first year pro and second round pick in Kent Simpson.

I think the real truth was in camp Pearce might have beat out McCollum and the Wings are giving him his last chance. With that said Pearce has been awful and since he is off to medical school after this year, I think it is time to pull the plug on that.

One thing to consider is that the Wings may prefer to let Mrazek stay settled and transition to professional life in Toledo instead of moving him up because if the lockout ends no matter how well Mrazek does it's fairly certain he'd be shipped right back to Toledo since Joey MacDonald would be back as the Griffins starter and the team really wants to give McCollum the year in the AHL to sink-or-swim. For a kid like Mrazek who is known to be very emotional it could get into his head if he's demoted mid-season, especially if he is really outplaying McCollum at that point. Maybe the Wings feel that until the NHL season is officially cancelled it's better to leave him where he'll be playing if and when a season starts. For an older vet type kid like Pearce or McCollum shuttling up and down is something they are used to. For Mrazek it'd be a pretty new experience to pile on top of just learning to be a pro and living on his own and all the other stuff that comes with kids out of juniors trying to adjust to a pro game. Can't forget the human element here as well, prospect development isn't always just about on-ice performance.

Too many bodies, not enough spaces to put them. Billins pretty much took Almqvist's role from him. Not so much that AA played bad as Billins has just been excellent. Nicastro from all accounts has played ok when he gets in, although he might be injured. He's a little behind the development curve with that whole incident in college so this is probably just an accelerated catch-up season for him where you hope he's ready to start next year running. Fournier.....haven't heard much of him so I don't know why he isn't getting in. Paetsch seems to fill the type of role Fournier would and that might be why. I don't think Blashill can really bench Paetsch either since iirc he has an A and it's too early to bench a team leader.

I'm guessing the Wings/Griffins brass was expecting Billins to be competing with Nicastro, Fournier, and Almyquist for a roster spot. Instead, he sits 2nd among rookie AHL defenseman after Justin Schultz of all people. IMO, thats why Almquist hasn't gotten as much time. They're both small, offensive guys, and the Griffins look like they're in desperate need of some sound defensive play.

As for Nicastro and Fournier, I'm not sure the Wings think much of them right now. They're probably going to have to be content with sharing the #6 spot or take advantage of an injury opening up a roster spot.

I agree on all accounts. Although I'm not quite sure what separates Lashoff and Evans from Nicastro, aside from experience. I think it must be Nicastro's penalty-killing ability. Or rather his lack thereof. Lashoff plays the top PK unit if I'm not mistaken. Is Evans a top PKer as well? If so, maybe Nicastro simply needs more time to get the hang of a regular PK role before the staff feels ok substituting him for Lashoff/Evans on the regular.

As for Fournier, he's a non-physical offensive defenseman who isn't particularly big or strong. I think he's at the bottom of the D pile at this point.

Lashoff and Evans seem to be the top PK pair from what I can tell. At the very least they are 2/3 of the top 3 along with Smith.

Regarding the D: I think the lockout is hurting Nicastro, Fournier and Almqvist. Smith would normally be with the big club, which would open a spot for one of this group. Billins, although an AHL rookie, is a couple of years older than Almqvist and Fournier. I would like to see more of these guys, but may need to wait for some injuries.

Griffs' PP is firing at 25%

PK... 75%. Yikes. I wonder how much of that is goaltending, though.

I'm thinking this could be a solid team if somehow the other team didn't score every single time Pierce or McCollum has to make a difficult save. (Although McCollum has been the better of the two this season for sure.)

It doesn't seem like they're giving guys a lot of chances right now. Tatar/Andersson/Nyquist are playing about half the game, and so is the Smith pairing, and Billins seems out on the PP every time. It looks like Blashill just wants to go with what works for now. Unfortunately, you can't really say things are working out on the defensive side of things.

i was looking at stats just now, and tatar has scored 6 of his 8p on PP, 3g, 3a.

in highlights i have seen, GR look pretty bad defensively. goaltending also looks weak.

Regarding Almqvist he was playing in the last two games and slowly started to show more. He was playing regularly on the second PP unit with Paetsch, he moves the puck well but needs to shoot more. His own zone work was fine especially yesterday. I think he won a role for next weekend but you never know. A big reason for Smith and Almqvist not shining more offensively is because Billins has emerged as the team's best puck mover to start the season. If they limit Billins defensive minutes they're gonna have great use of him down there.

^they didn't give Nyquist assist on the last goal, weird.

And that's Evans for ya. He's like a defensive defenseman without the defense.

Those were some sick moves and patience from Tatar on the last goal. All three forwards made great passes. I would assume Nyquist will be credited with an assist.

Apparently Mrazek will be joining the Griffins already today, so that didn't take too long. Good for him.

Thanks for posting. It was a weak call, looked like Smith pushed Longpre into McCollum. But with all the whining by the announcers it was pretty awesome the power play resulted in the GWG.

From what I could tell the call wasn't goalie interference, it was interference on Smith who got bumped for no reason.

Boy Tatar is looking great! Skating and working the puck he looks like Filppula. On Friday Babs was pumped about him, saying he was "dominant" in the 1st period of that game.

And Pearce takes Mrazek's place in Toledo. Confirmation for this: http://www.griffinshockey.com/news/r...rticle_id=2271

Next games are on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
