Take in account that the Oilers would rather have RNH over all of them. We're not trading our Number 1 center for potential.
Wasn't RNH potential at one point? And he went on to put up phenomenal numbers for a 19-year-old rookie (52 points over 62 games). No one can say that Monahan, Jones, Mackinnon, or someone else could go on and do even better. So I don't think it's impossible that RNH could be traded for the first overall or around there, with adding from whichever side needs it.

We're not talking about the 1st overall though we're talking about the 4th. This is a scenario in which Edmonton got the 1st overall, and the offer was JVR+Colborne+1st.
If edmonton doesn't hypothetically trade down for jones to a team taking Mackinnon their out of their mind. They would have to score 9 times a game.
If they don't get a good deal for 1st overall, then taking MacKinnon is good management.
You always take the BPA unless you can recoup full value of the pick.
Edmonton has one of the deeper defensive prospect pools in the league and should be able to become an average defensive team with better goaltending.

Then next year the Oilers could trade Jones for the new shiny prospect. Just wait it gets better, they can move the new shiny prospect for the newer shinier one. Hell maybe they can even nab that newest shiniest one the next year. At some point the Oilers need to start winning hockey games.
If the Oilers were to win the lottery I would keep RNH 11/10 over MacKinnon anyways.
The Oilers won't be that bad or that lucky again IMO.
I am hoping the Jackets get Mackinnon, someone out east gets Jones, and the Oilers find a way to make a late playoff push and get a pick in the 8-12 range.
We will still get a very good player and win more games.

How are they out of their minds? Why the heck would Trade RNH for a pick to get Jones? Why not just keep RNH and Mackinnon? Doesn't make any sense to trade RNH
- A pick which will probably be top 5
- Tyler Biggs, a recent 1st round pick who has been getting better every day since he was drafted
- Frattin, solid prospect
- Colborne, solid prospect
- Kadri, boom/bust prospect
combined, don't make up the gap between Rielly and MacKinnon?
The leafs were, according to sportsnet, offered the NYI pick in the Tavares draft for the leafs 1st (7th OA) + Luke Schenn. Which they turned down (which they shouldn't have)

It....Was....A....Joke....
I was jokign at the fact that you are throwing everything but the kitchen sink in there.

So just because a player is already playing for the team, it means that you wouldn't take someone better that might come along?
I'm not saying that EDM would do it, but again, it's not impossible.
Again, Mackinnon, Jones, and Monahan are all being talked about as generational talents.
Not sure if mocking or agreeing, but hilarious nonetheless.
I think you may be using the term generational a bit too freely.
A generational talent is a player like Crosby and Ovechkin (in his prime).
And now there are apparently 3 generational talents in this draft alone? I haven't heard anyone talk about Monahan and generational in the same sentence. There's not even a guarantee he goes ahead of a guy like Barkov.
There are a lot of good players in this draft, i.e. Barkov, Shinkaruk, Monahan, Lazar, etc., but none of these players project to be generational talents.
That being said, Mackinnon and Jones definitely seem to have franchise player potential, and maybe even the potential to be a generational player, but that would still be a difficult accomplishment.
Someone said on page 4. Instead of a package of lesser players why not just keep RNH and have an awesome 1-2 punch down the middle or just take Jones and keep RNH.

If the Leafs are that desperate to land MacKinnon, then why would the other team be so inclined to pass on him?

Why not just keep RNH and draft Seth Jones. The Oilers' defence is not that good long term without Jones.

THere ya have it folks. /thread because if there is big enough interest in a pick/player, that means that pick/player is untradeable because whatever the package that gets offered, one (apparently) has to assume that the package is insufficient.
However I assume that the logic of this only applies to the offer, not the offeree, since otherwise the 1st OA 2013 would be insufficient compensation for Biggs, TOR 1st 2013, Frattin, Colborne and Kadri.

couldn't have said it better myself. While some teams like CBJ or another small market team may want to draft Mackinnon or another player solely to attract fans, winning games has the same effect.
