Verrrrrrry good.
The Rocket wasn't a documentary. And the "Day That Changed the Game" series on NHL Network is pretty good.

Back in high school I watched one on Bobby Orr and I haven't been able to find it since. I don't even remember the title.

Hey guys I wanna bump this, would love to know of any more that are up on youtube not mentioned here. I like the concept of Hockey A People's History but I find the non-NHL stuff there and the people's aspect to be boring. I wish they made a 10 part series like that about the history of the NHL and recapped each era in a way starting with the 20s.

The other awesome one was that '98 one which featured Thornton being drafted and all the behind the scenes phone conversations like the negotiation of the Domi contract (I think it's called Day in the life or something). Would love to see more of that, HBO should focus on that angle more but they usually do coach speeches and following players around.

I actually thought King's Ransom was one of the worst 30 for 30's. Still enjoyable, just not on par with the likes of Best that Never Was, Run Ricky Run, Once Brothers, 4 Days in October or June 17, 1994 etc. Still worth a watch if you're craving a 'Hockumentary' though.

The Forgotten Miracle: Really good look at the 1960 USA Olympic gold medal team in Squaw Valley.

(Amazon link because the IMDB page has nothing on it)

Broadstreet Bullies was excellent. Also, Do You Believe In Miracles: The Story of the 1980s Mens Hockey Team. I've seen that about 15 times. And the documentary of the 1960s USA gold medal winning hockey team as mentioned above, that's very good too.

Gold Rush 2002 - Team Canada.

World Cup Of Hockey 2004.

Hockey Gold 2010 - Team Canada.

A Day In The Life Of The Toronto Maple Leafs. It was a book published in 2002 based on the behind scenes events between a Leafs & Rangers game at the Air Canada Centre in December 2001. It was also shown as a documentary a few times on Leafs TV.

Punched Out, this one's about Derek Boogaard. Bit depressing but quite fascinating. Todd Fedoruk comes off as quite articulate as well, bit of a surprise for me.

Documentary: The Last Gladiators

I had an opportunity to watch this documentary last night, I would like share some brief thoughts on it. From what I understood, the original undertaking of this film was to explore the role of the enforcer in the NHL, from the view point of several ex-enforcers. Through the course of the filming, the objective deviated and became focused on Chris "Knuckles" Nilian and his struggles.

Nilian has always been an interesting character to me and the narrative provided from him, really makes this human interest story enjoyable. He was really raw, honest and didn't hold anything back— considering his personality and career I don't think he knows how to. In addition to Nilian's story, the documentary does a good job touching on the unspoken "code" of a fighter referencing the personalities of that era.

I did not have an opportunity to watch games from that time, so I found the documentary provided me with good insight. Even when the code has been discussed a lot these last few years, by the end of this film, walked away with a better understanding of it.

It's playing in theaters in select cities right now. If you have chance to see this film I would really recommend doing so. If only for Nilian's amazing Boston accent.

It was directed by Academy Award winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (a lot of his work is awesome).

Also, I miss hockey after watching this

tl;dr: Good hockey doc. watch Nilian... Boston accent...no hockey sad

Hetfield is a huge hockey fan. Back in the mid 90's he showed up in NHL ads and on many different NHL shows including NHL Cool Shots.

I've seen quite a bit of documentaries related to hockey, but my favourite is about Baie-Comeau Drakker where the team is last place. Certain players have a chance of getting draft, while others don't. Some players follow their agents advice and struggle, while other players listen to the coach and improve. One player gets kicked off the team, while another one gets traded to a destination he didn't want to go.

You just get so much high points followed by low points in this doc. It's also in 99% French, but has English subtitles.
