Winds are rising in Sorel. Lots of people are nervous here tonight, lots of houses are old wood houses that are poorly maintained. They will take the winter gusts but...

My house is creaking....

Well it's been windy as **** in Toronto for a few hours now if that means anything to Montreal.

EDIT: Someone was killed in Toronto from the flying debris.

They forecast wind gusts that could reach 90 km/h and more. Last night CYUL was gusting at 70 km/h at some point, it's not impossible that somewhere wind gusts reached 90 km/h.

I think the storm went deeper into US land than anticipated. I often checked Sandy's progression over the last 2 days and it was expected to move north shortly after reaching the US coastline and then move back north-east following the St-Lawrence once it reached Canada. It didn't. It kept moving west so in Canada it's Ontario that gets the worst of it while in Montreal we had strong winds last night but not much else. Just yesterday Meteomedia.ca forecasted 25-45 mm of water between Monday and Wednesday in Montreal. Now they're saying it'll only be 10-20 mm, which isn't extraordinary at all.

It's all but over here in DC; there was a good 30 hours of heavy wind and rain though my area avoided any real issues.

New York is another story, my parents block turned into a river. They somehow avoided damage but their house was one of the few to not lose power, a neighbours siding was wrecked. My grandparents currently have neither power or even cellphone service and their roof was damaged. My friends in central Queens/Brooklyn didn't get much though a few trees blew over; down the block from a friend in brooklyn two people were killed when a tree hit them while walking their dog.

Meanwhile southern Queens is basically in ruins.

CNN was reporting earlier today that roughly 80 houses burnt down because of fire in Queens.

Probably not, however on the west side of Ottawa the sky is getting dark now. The day was beautiful. Some wind, but nice temp and some sun. Rained all last night.

Near Toronto I have a friend who has been without power for a day now.

That sounds like a reverse "A fish called Wanda" Killing everyone around the dogs, but never the damn thing itself.

You have to admit its rather annoying that they made it seem like this storm would be snatching our ppl up and to hide our kids and hide our wives. It blew over my garbage can. Look out!

I understand we got "spared" and the coastal US got hit hard.. But still, I despise sensationalism.
