Sponsoring other sports to gain fans?

Not sure who heard, because Eugene Melnyk apparently didn't really know until after, but the Sens are entering a partnership with Canadian golfer Brad Fritsch.

This happened a day after Fritsch received his PGA card.

After hearing it for the second time and hearing McCown question Melnyk if they are worried about losing sponsors, I have to ask why not do more of this?

Why don't more NHL teams pay local heros who go accross North America who target a various group of viewers?

Would not having teams logo's or even the NHL logo on golfers, boxers, mma fighters or even poker players be a good way to get the game out there?
