A couple times a year we see a thread for the worst trades of all time, and while I'm sure this thread has come up in the past, it's much more rare. What were some huge deals for Toronto that worked out?
There are two major ones that come to mind immediately, but let's see if we can get anything aside from the obvious trades with Calgary and Quebec. (Of course, the Sundin trade is tops in my personal opinion, but I'm only 23)
The Gilmour trade in 92' is one of the very best in NHL history and the best Leaf trade ever. Turned us from a joke to a cup contender. We got an elite superstar for junk.

I remember in Theo Fleury's book, his comments on that trade.. That was a doozy.
That Gardiner trade was just amazing for us. A legit top line player, and a potential top pair D for a player who was playing like ass with us.
It looks so lopsided now but it made sense when the trade was made. Gardiners game wasn't supposed to translate so well into the NHL and Lupul was a salary dump. People didn't even think he was going to play, and a lot of people were upset when we got him. A trade worked out in our favor for once.

And they had Shultz so they thought they could afford to give up Gardiner. Plan did not work out well.
That trade isn't getting enough coverage in terms of how horrendous it is for Anaheim.

Imagine Anaheim with Gardiner, Schultz (who looks awesome in the AHL), Vatanen (who also is looking really good), and Fowler. Those are 4 young stud dmen. Sucks for Anaheim.
And I would hardly call the JVR trade a fleece.

We traded a guy who showed no development in three years for a guy who's already shown he can dominate at the nhl level. It will be called a fleece job soon enough
I still remember that game against Boston in the playoffs. Which philly actually lost, But he was incredible. I mean he could have had 5 goals, He was absolutely dominant.

I think we won the trade and I like JVR. Just don't think it's a fleece job yet, as you said. If he can stay healthy I can see him doing real well here.
It's a mistake to write as if Leafs history began sometime in the 90's. There were trades at least as big as anything named here, involving first all stars, scoring champs and multiple Stanley Cup winners.
Perhaps the best ever Leafs trade, almost certainly the most one-sided, was acquiring perennial all star Red Kelly in 1960 for the utterly unmemorable Marc Reaume. Kelly was shifted to centre and was a key to four Leafs Cup victories. Acquiring King Clancy for two little known players and cash was a pretty one-sided deal also, back in 1930. Kelly's eight total Stanley Cups is the highest in history for a player who was not a Montreal Canadien.
Perhaps the biggest trade was the deal for scoring champ and Hart Trophy winner, Max Bentley. The Leafs sent five players including an entire forward line from the 47 Cup winners to Chicago for Bentley and a throw in in 1947. Bentley was a key player on three Leaf cupwinners. The players traded for Bentley included two former Calder Trophy winners and three past and future all stars.
Another mammoth trade was in 1942 for another first all star and scoring champ, Sweeney Schriner. The Leafs sent five players, including aging legend Busher Jackson to the New York Americans for Schriner. Schriner played on two Cup winners.
All those and many more count as good trades in my view.

This was a great trade. You have to put Gilmour up there along with Sundin. Trading Tiger for Vaive. Go back in the 60's and all kinds of trades were made that brought cups. Hard to pin point one or two in particular. There are a lot that went the wrong way too.
