So the Leafs trade a #1 defensemen, their best forward prospect, their current top line center and a 1st for a guy who has never scored 70 points? Don't get me wrong, Duchene is a stud with boatloads of potential but there's no way the Leafs give up this much for one player unless that player is proven as an elite talent.

...and if that player was a proven elite talent, there's no way the other team is going to trade him to you for that package.

You can say whatever you want about Duchene, but he hit 67 pts as a 19 year old and if you really did the research, you'd know that he was on pace for over 80 pts that season before the wheels fell off on the whole team to end the year.

Using 'their current top line center' to describe Tyler Bozak is a bit misleading, don't you think?

Phaneuf has value to be sure but the part I don't get is why the Avs need to give up a 21 year old with 'boatloads of potential' (on a good contract) to acquire a D-man like Phaneuf when they will most assuredly be able to sign a guy like that through free agency. What's the rush? Are the Avs, 'Phaneuf away from contending'??? Not really.

I think this about what it would take value wise to get Duchene out of Colorado. Still don't think I'd pull the trigger on it. That said, it's pretty clear that the value favors the Avs (I'd suggest only slightly). It doesn't make too much sense for Toronto, opening up one hole all while dumping valuable futures.
