Scott Gomez was released by the ECHL's Alaska Aces yesterday.

Edit: Damn, he wasn't going to play there and was just there to train.
Makes it less funny.

I'll be going to a lot more Komets games this year, it appears.
It would have been nice to heckle him.

It'll be interesting to see how the move to Brooklyn affects the image of the Islanders as a destination to UFAs. They've just moved much closer to Manhattan--and Brooklyn is no slouch, either--and into a state-of-the-art arena, knocking out two of the elements that, IMO, kept players away: location and facilities. Of course, they're still run by Wang, and they've been losers for awhile, but this will definitely help the organization.

And before someone inevitably makes the comparison to the Devils, their new arena, and their proximty to Manhattan, I'd first say that Brooklyn isn't Newark. Secondly, I think the Isles have a larger built-in fanbase than the Devils have; NJ has struggled with attendance for as long as I can remember.

The Barclays only seats 14,500 for hockey. It cannot be a long-term option, can it?

Sure, why not? The Islanders haven't averaged that since 2002-03, and the average ticket price is going to go through the roof--not to mention concessions and everything else that goes with it. Winnipeg's capacity is 15,000, and probably can't charge close to the prices that the Isles will be able to in Brooklyn.

I think that if Winnepeg has taught the league anything, its that a smaller, packed, buzzing arena > selling out 10 of 18k. And Ratner is on the record saying they'd make a few renovations to accommodate hockey.

I'm really, really excited by the potential here.

For the Islanders sake, I hope this moves turns their fortunes around.

They will keep the NY Islanders name and logos. So, all the Brooklyn Nets/NY Islanders mashups will come to an end.

I wonder what the bump will be for corporate boxes and club seats from the Coliseum to Barclays. The closer proximity to Manhattan should make it easier for them to charge a premium for those sort of seats.

Right now, Jets fans are paying quite a bit to see the team play in Winnipeg- avg. ticket prices are the second-highest in the league behind Toronto's at $98, so that would be impressive to see the Islanders pull off even bigger prices for tickets and/or concessions etc.

For those who haven't seen it, here's an article addressing some of the potential issues brought on by this move: http://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/20...omplex-issues/

The "bump" has been estimated at $35M:
Quote:
The Coliseum, built in 1972 and barely renovated since, has 31 luxury suites and a relatively small number of high-priced premium seats. Knopp estimates that the suites generate about $3 million a year and the premium seats about $16 million.

Barclays Center, which is far more geographically convenient to corporate customers than the Coliseum, has 104 luxury suites. Knopp estimated that those suites would generate about $21 million for the Islanders, while premium seating would generate an additional $33 million. That comes to $54 million from suites and premium seats — $35 million more per year than what the Islanders generate at the Coliseum.

...and there go the November games:

NHL informs teams games up to and including Nov. 30 will be cancelled. As far as I know, there was no mention of Winter Classic.

I interned for the Isles this summer, walked past those suites every single day. Trust me, they're using the word "luxury" very, very loosely. The boxes at the BCA are quite a bit nicer than the ones at the Coliseum.

LeBrun reporting that the Winter Classic will be cancelled this afternoon:

Barring a last-minute change of heart by top league officials, I still expect Winter Classic to be cancelled this afternoon.

And that Detroit will remain the host in the 2013-14 season:

And I would expect Detroit to host it next season - with Leafs-Wings remaining the matchup

I've actually started to become apathetic. Yeah I miss hockey, and I miss the Sabres, but this pissing match between two groups of people whom I am starting to develop an intense dislike for is not worth much more emotional investment.

Speculation has begun on Winter Classic sites if a CBA can be reached soon; Buffalo with a mention:
Quote:
Kevin Paul Dupont ‏@GlobeKPD
Could be wrong, but I could see, say, BOS, CHI or BUF hosting a 1-1-13 Winter Classic if CBA settled quickly. Been there, done that.

Link: http://twitter.com/GlobeKPD/status/265118619086753793
As an aside, the Bills host the Jets on Dec 30 at the Ralph.
