I didn't know the WC was such a big deal it seems counter-intuitive to cancel all the games just because you can't have that one game?

I know the WC is kind of a big deal... but I didn't think it would be THAT big of a deal.

Wrong.

They can cancel any time until the day of the event with only a loss of 100k.

The move has been speculated for some time, as the league's payment plan for use of the Big House at the University of Michigan calls for $250,000 to be paid to the school on Friday. The rest of the payment schedule was to have $1 million paid on Dec. 7 and on Dec. 28 and $650,000 on Jan. 18.

If it's the day of the event they also lose all the other money as well, though. Unless they don't pay that money and cancel earlier

This is sort of correct.

I believe that the NHL gets back all additional funds paid, minus those reasonably accrued by the university in the preparation for the event. (whatever that means)

I posted on the thread about the out clause in event of the lockout or other matters. It's definitely in there

Can't seem to find the thread though

edit :

I believe this is the article as it was in my history..

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/13/sp...sic.html?_r=4&

Quote:
The N.H.L. can cancel the Jan. 1 Winter Classic at 115,000-seat Michigan Stadium as late as Jan. 1, the day of the game, because of a work stoppage “arising from the lack of a collective bargaining agreement,” the contract between the league and the University of Michigan shows.

The league would forfeit only $100,000 of its $3 million stadium rental fee, according to the contract. The rest of the fee would be refunded by the university.

Looks like that's a wrap, boys.

Question is, have we seen Timonen's last game in the NHL?

What a frickin joke.

Morganti said this morning that if they took a vote from all the players, there's no doubt they would take a deal and it would be complete in a half hour.

great job NHL and Bettman. just perfect timing with everything else going on. You keep worrying about yourselves. Like always.
Yes the NHLPA can go **** off as well. They can all go to Hell as far as I am concerned.

I don't buy that for a second, we've heard nothing but unity from the PA. If there were that many players who would accept the deal we would hear of at least a group pushing for a vote. Right or wrong Fehr has the PA convinced the deals get better if they wait.

While I have my concerns about Bryz still....Leighton is a complete travesty. I mean not even the worst local Siberian team wants him during this lockout

So that cancels all NHL games to at least Jan 1st? This sucks...it doesn't even feel like they're negotiating anymore. I just don't get how it benefits anyone for them to wait for figuring this out.

Bettman can stuff it. I don't think he or the league realizes what a laughing stock it's become. I'm going to my first OHL game of the season on Sunday so I'll start getting my hockey fix that way.

I think the games are only cancelled through November, not December. The WC was cancelled because they didn't want to pay the installment that was due today.

Not officially. Only games through the end of November have been cancelled so far.

Thats a complete fabrication. They could have cancelled the day before and paid $250,000.

The NHL have shown that they have had enough of this bull.
