I don't understand the Haren hate... last 7 starts he was great:

42 IP
13 ER
34 Ks
5 BBs

No one is asking him to come in here and be a top 5 pitcher in the MLB... but for a guy on a one year contract, who wouldn't cost much to bring in. Why not? Hell of a lot better than Volstad or Travis Wood, and he very well could be a very good #2 SP.

Hope they prove my pessimism wrong.
I would agree with all of that.

Have you seen the rosters that won the world series the past few years? The Cubs are more than capable of replicating some of those teams talentwise.

Agreed. He's expensive but the Cubs have the money for a 1 year deal. His numbers are going to look a lot better in the national league too.

You can even take that back to an 8th start and his numbers improve a little bit, specifically his K rate.

Haren had a 4.33 ERA last season. Seems like you usually see about a .5 ERA drop when a pitcher changes leagues. Could easily see him putting up a 3.85 ERA next year which would be great for the Cubs.

I have nothing against picking up Haren. It could work out really well, if not, he'll eat innings.

I'm all for Haren and a bat.

Garza
Haren
Shark
FA/Trade
Wood

is a pretty solid rotation.

He also had a bad back in June that he tried to pitch thru, that I'm willing to cut some slack on his total numbers... before he sucked it up and hit the DL.

If anything, that's what you'd have to worry about... but when his back is healthy, he is still a good pitcher. He would thrive in Wrigley with that splitter.

If you get Haren for $15.5, Marcum for $10, and Youkilis for $8-10 you could have a payroll under $100 mil and a rotation/starting line up of

Garza - Haren - Samardzjia - Marcum - Wood

1. Dejesus
2. Youk
3. Rizzo
4. Soriano
5. Castro
6. CF (free agent)
7. Barney
8. Castillo

Thats a pretty solid team. Its not going to win you the world series but you are full of guys that could be flipped at the deadline if they are playing well.

Also very realistic that Dempster could be in that rotation as well.

Then go get JP Howell.

Haren's so good we're pitching him twice!

I don't get the fascination with Youkilis. He's the definition of mediocre at this point.

now that's a rotation. Add a decent third baseman and an average RF/CF - DeJesus can slide over - and the team actually looks above average.

I certainly don't want him for more than a year.

He's better than Louis Valbuena and Josh Vitters.

Rolen or bringing in another 2B and moving Barney over might work too... team is building toward relevance quickly.

So?

He's clearly declining. He's an average hitter at this point and has no range.

He had a down year and was banged up a lot of the year last year, but he was still in the top half of 3rd basemen in OPS and wOBA last year.

He couldn't hit a barn outside of Fenway and the Cell, and he's missed 40-60 games in the last 3 years.

That, and he is a massive d-bag that I wouldn't want around when the kids start to come up.

He had a .206 BABIP last year outside of Chicago and Boston, that is flukey low. There's nothing special about Fenway or the Cell that would contribute to him hitting well there and poorly everywhere else. Most likely, its a statistical anomoly.
