Make Whole, Not War (CBA & Lockout Discussion) XIX
While I lean pro-PA, being a union member myself, I realized the NHL made some concessions with their last offer, but I also understood when the PA didn't take it as is. The PA's holdout is earning them more concessions, as I fully expected. Fehr is not the dummy everyone makes him out to be. He is a shrewd negotiator. That said, I will be mad if the PA doesn't help make a deal soon after this latest news. Let's get on that ice!
We will find out in short order just how schrwd he is. This is probably the last push from the NHL moderates to save the season.
Yeah - but is Bettman gonna like this enough to support it? I know it's coming from the league side but that doesn't always mean the Count is on board does it?
What? Of course Bettman's supporting the owners proposal. He is the head of negotiations for them, he's the one presenting this to them.

Without running the numbers, my gut tells me that even with a 50/50 all contracts totally honoured deal stuck next week would net the players less money than the Owners last offer of 50/50. We shall see though.
This is basically what the PA should have counter-prosposed themselves on the NHLs offer. Tweak the freaking make whole provision idiots. I'd toss this on Fehr's table and tell him to **** off if he isn't willing to work within the framework.

depends how the PA responds.
if it's another delinked proposal, we're going into december without a proposal.
I also wouldnt say the players have saved money waiting longer, the WC being gone just lost alot of money for the league as well as the 15-20 games we just lost. 200million wont make that up.
It's a solid soft landing push. I'm hoping the PA actually responds with the same language though, or else we're not seeing hockey until january at the earliest IMO.
This is the exact positive dialogue that was talked about all week between Steve Fehr and Daly in phone convos. It's a huge step and yet another step in the right direction, solid move once again by the league.
Is it going to be enough for the players though?
The framework is RIGHT THERE, just figure it out and get it done and put this hell behind us.
I just hope something gets done while I still care because, to date, I haven't missed hockey nearly as much as I thought I would. Certainly nothing compared to the last lockout.

I agree this will definitely show us if Fehr really wants to make a deal or not. I do not know how much more the NHL has to give beyond some tweaks. I'm realistic about the offer needing to be something sustainable for the league in the future. The PA needs to recognize that.

problem with that is that last lockout when the players proposed something towards the owners the NHL apparently put it in their back pocket and wanted other concessions....so the NHLPA is leary about what they offer
All of the Pro PA people think the NHL hasn't made a single concession yet
Hopefully this gets them back to the table earlier than next week. Meet for awhile tomorrow.
save the damn season
Eh, this whole episode is first and foremost a concession by the players (57% revenues reduced to whatever). What's being negotiated is how much they will concede.
I'm still taking the optimistic view here. That the owners and players somehow know if the deal got done in a week or so the WC could be revived and therefore they're trying to meet that crunch. Losing the WC is very bad for both sides. One important part about the WC is that it's the ideal kick-off point for the NHL season. It's a "Hey, the NHL's back! Look, Winter Classic! Isn't it fun this is the first game?" to get the buzz going. I think they're going to get very serious in the next half week to make an attempt to save it

Not happening. Only because it will take more than a week to iron this out. it's gonna take at least a few weeks if this gains traction, enough for a late november/December 1st start. Which IMO is not worth saving the WC for, I want 24/7 and that's not enough time for it.
Get back to the table on the weekend or on Monday, negotiate the entire week until it's done, announce a deal, revive the Classic after getting the big house back on board, open camp the week after.
Don't be stupid players, just wake up and do what's right. This is what you've been whining about all along.

The NHL's verbal offer to absorb some or all of Make Whole was made Tuesday. 3 days ago?? PA wants more detail before getting too excited.

Woah?
THREE days ago and there's been no response at all from the players yet? Really??
If it's some or all, the deal has to get done in a matter of days. It's really that simple.
