#Angels are on the verge of trading RHP Dan Haren to the #Cubs for RH reliever Carlos Marmol.

I'm really curious what the Angels do with the rotation now. Richards gets a spot, and Greinke is a necessity now, but that leaves one spot open.

I'm sad to see Haren leave, he was always on the hill giving 100%.

Didn't want Haren if it was going to cost us anything more than free. This is like being paid to take him. Very nice.

You have to think the Angels are very confident that Greinke will be signed.

So the Angels think a reliever with major walk problems making $9.8 million next year is better than a mid rotation starter at worst making $15.5 million. They would have been better off declining the option on Haren than taking Marmol. Morons.

Even if they do sign him, they'd only have 3 starting pitchers (Weaver, Wilson, and Greinke). After that, they have scrubs and crap.

Exactly. I would've prefered another minor leaguer for depth instead of this. Hopefully for the Angels, he comes back to his 2008 self, but it probably won't happen. ****.

I liked a lot Haren, too. Even though he had a bad year, I still liked him quite a bit, and he showed signs of improvement after resting up the back half way through the year. He could've had a good upcoming season.

Haren isn't good enough to be a #1 anymore.

That's a fallacy unless you are under the belief that one bad year = no longer a #1 anymore. Outside of this past season, Haren was a top 15 pitcher in baseball.

If that's true for you, then following your argument, Roy Halladay is also not a #1 anymore.

Haren gets traded a lot for a pretty good pitcher. (Yes I know he had a bad year last year)

Haren is slowly declining. Probably will put up better numbers than this past season, but he isn't the same pitcher that he used to be. He's a solid mid-rotation starter at this point in his career, IMO.

Haren had a drastic decrease in maximal velocity from his prime years and doesn't have near the secondary stuff of a Roy Halladay. He's not a #1 anymore.

Twins were rumored to be in on Santana and interested in Haren.

Marmol is horrible. Even if Haren is on the decline, I give this one to the Cub.

Everyone has an opinion. That's cool. But you responded to my post, which was an argument. Do you actually have an argument for your opinion, or were you just interested in telling everybody your opinion? If the latter, you didn't have to respond to my post...

Some actual arguments for a claim. Cool.

Let's examine them.

Quote:
"Haren had a drastic decrease in maximal velocity from his prime years"
1) Define ''prime years''. Was that not 1 year removed from this past season, where he posted a 6.1 WAR, his usual high innings pitched, K/BB rate, respectable SIERRA, xFIP, ERA, and strike-out rate?

2) "drastic decrease in maximal velocity".

Is this dramatic to you?

Fastball:

2007 - 91.7, 2008 - 91.1, 2009 - 90.6, 2010 - 90.6, 2011 - 90.0, 2012 - 88.5

How is Haren's "drastic decrease in maximal velocity" of which, only his fastball shows a real linear decline, impacting him? This is a guy who throws his fastballl between 40-50% of the time, which is nowhere near as high as other aces.

Quote:
"doesn't have near the secondary stuff of a Roy Halladay."
Please explain what you mean by ''secondary stuff'' because his walk-rate, strike-out rate, and innings pitched are all basically similar with innings pitched being the main difference. All of this has to be attributed to good secondary stuff.

Quote:
He's not a #1 anymore.
Because of one bad season where he also had back troubles and was on the DL for the first time in his career? Previous to this year, so for 8 years in a row, he had pitched 200 innings.

Again, I don't understand why you cannot attribute this year to a statistical anomaly when for 5 years prior he was the definition of consistent.

The only real argument is, "He has a bad back and hasn't recovered; we don't feel he is capable of pitching to an ace standard anymore because of it, therefore we are getting rid of him."

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
Haren-for-Marmol NOT done. #Angels continue to talk to other clubs. #Cubs asked Marmol about teams on his no-trade and whether he would MORE

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
agree to trade to #Angels. Again, no deal with #Cubs is complete. Possible, but not complete.
