i knew we were due for a wishful thinking thread on malkin. i didn't read through everything - but i'm sure at least 1 poster projected their own feelings when it comes to geno sharing the spotlight with crosby. things like "malkin will get tired of being in crosby's shadow" were probably stated as fact as some point.
he will get a blank check. but, by all means, keep hope alive...
I think people talking about trading for NHL players are a little off. To get Malkin, it'd probably take 2 or 3 NHL players that would offset his salary, quite a few top tier prospects, and draft picks.
The trade would have to continually pay for itself years down the line, and it would with NHL players, prospects, and picks.
Kesler > Patches
Edler > Subban
Price >> Schneider
1st > nothing(although I'd add a winger prospect like Jensen/Kassian if neccessary)
But I didn't have MAF coming our way, so they could presumably trade him somewhere else for a solid return.
Edler > Subban is arguable. I would rather have Subban in terms of potential. Subban can be a very special player. I really think he is going to break out soon. I also think Kesler and Patches is going to be a lot closer in value soon. How is Kesler going to be this year after major surgery? Not to mention he might re-injure himself by one of his ridiculous dives.
Malkin might be the best player in the league. I'd think they'd try to lock him up like they did Crosby, and tried for Staal(I believe they did before trading him right?) He will get the most ridiculous contract by that time which for him won't be ridiculous because I think he'll be the best player in the league for years to come along with Stamkos. As long as he keeps his health.
Both Sedins and Edler for Malkin, Orpik and some lesser value NHL forward.
Pittsburgh gets older, but now has three Hart and Art Ross calibre players, and possibly two that would be in the Richard race. Plus Edler-Letang as pairing would be enough to make opposition shriek.
Sedin-Crosby-Sedin
Letang-Edler
Automatic PP goal.
All of this is ridiculous though, being that Pittsburgh would never trade their franchise center...either of them...so I'm just having fun.

They did. Staal essentially signed the same deal Pittsburgh offered him, but with Carolina. It really comes down to whether or not Geno wants to stay with the Pens. By all accounts he loves it there and doesn't seem to come off as the guy who wants the spotlight. He may enjoy not having to be "the guy" all the time. On top of that, neither Crosby or Malkin seem to have egos that would drive each other out. It seems like a healthy competition/respect between them. I don't know the guy personally though, so I'm just shooting smoke.
Malkin can't lead the team to victory every game. He, like everyone else needs a supporting cast.
Doubt he gets traded unless Pittsburgh misses the playoffs for a couple of years.
2-3 roster players
1-2 1st round picks
1-2 of the teams better prospects.
Still a lot, but not 5-6 roster players++
Malkin lead a line of Fedotenko and Talbot and was the playoff MVP. I think he can do a lot with average players. He also lead the league in points with Ryan Malone and Petr Sykora as his mates. What else does this guy have to show to be on that top level?
If he's not traded for anything and everything Shero wants, he's not traded. It's that simple. Your proposal is junk w/o putting names to it. Nobody wants roster players and "better" prospects for top 5 players in the league UNLESS it's a forced situation.

I don't think a single team in the league could make Pittsburgh an offer they couldn't refuse without killing their team. Unless Malkin asks to be traded, he isn't going anywhere.

Can't disagree with that. A lot of stars today are in the same category. Then it becomes the question "Is it worth killing our team for one player?" And no... it's absolutely not.
As a Pens fan (and a huge Malkin homer), these are the realistic requirements I would expect from a trade involving Geno. This is assuming he has informed the organization he wants out and is not willing to re-sign.
Young top pairing defenseman
Replacement 2nd line center
Blue chip prospect

That being said, Geno goes nowhere and this thread is pointless.

Kobe managed to lead the Lakers to a few championships without a supporting cast in his prime.

Wait are we talking about a signed Malkin here? I assumed this thread was based upon what is next contract value would be? I mean if we are just talking about Malkin as a rental then I see him garnering something similar to what Kovi received. But if this is a signed long term then the sky is the limit.
