LOCKOUT GAME: Pretend there is a new expansion team... Who do you protect?

Here's a game for you guys to pass the time during the lockout, a hypothetical situation:

Let's pretend that The NHL and the PA get their **** together next week and announce that not only is a reduced schedule season announced to start Jan 1st, but also that... the NHL will introduce Quebec City as the newest NHL expansion team, to play in Le Colisee starting this year until their new arena is built.

Clearly, the goal of this little exercise isn't to debate the merits of adding a 31st NHL franchise (or where to add it), but to make a "protected list" of players in the Sens organization, and decide who to expose to the new Quebec franchise in their expansion draft.

For argument's sake, let's use the same rules that the NHL did in 1999, the last year a single team came into the league via expansion:

- You may protect either: one goalie, five defencemen, nine forwards, OR two goalies, three defencemen, seven forwards
- You must leave unprotected at least one defenseman who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.
- You must leave unprotected at least two forwards who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.
- Players under 25 years old (as of Jan 1, 2013) with less than 50 NHL GP are EXEMPT (you don't need to protect them, they are automatically protected and don't use one of your "slots".

SO fellow Sens fans: what does your "protected list" look like? Who do you make available in the draft?

Just to confirm, for the bolded, that is an 'and' , right? i.e. they are only auto-protected if they are under 25 AND have less than 50 games played?

I think the current restrictions are too easy. We can basically use the roster we will have as of July 1st.

Reduce the numbers and force people to choose.

Man I feel bad for Quebec. One year from winning the cup to rolling Condra on your top line.

I'm curious as to why folks are protecting Phillips over Methot. Meth still has plenty of good years ahead. Phillips is at the tail end of his career. I understand from a humanitarian perspective, but I'm just wondering if that's the only reason.

He has taken hometown discounts to play at home. He wants to retire a Senator.

We owe him that much for everything he does for the team.

You could make the same argument for taking Neil over Condra. But ya, the answer is sort of obvious for why you'd take the veteran over the younger, better player

We pretty much have

$3M for Methot is UFA market value... could just have signed a UFA instead of trading for him

Shocked at the lack of Bishop protection

Anderson
Bishop

Karlsson
Cowen
Phillips

Alfredsson
Spezza
Turris
Michalek
Smith
Greening
Neil

Regin, Condra, Daugavins, Latendresse, Lundin, Gonchar and Methot are available in this scenario...

Make Bishop available, and Gonchar, Methot, Regin and Latendresse become safe. Condra HAS to stay available (him or Neil) because of the minimum of 2 forwards with at least 70 games the past 2 seasons. Regin and Latendresse are not eligible to count for this...

Basically it comes down to whether or not to protect Bishop. If we didn't, he would absolutely get taken since the goalie market would for the most part be a barren wasteland, and Bish is a potential starter who is NHL ready right now, a nice fit for an expansion franchise.

If we do protect Bishop we likely lose one of Phillips or Methot, as Karlsson and Cowen must obviously be protected. Phillips, if unprotected, is 100% gone in my mind. I know he's older but an expansion franchise would likely see him as a mentor type and big team player. Methot would also stand a good chance of getting nicked, as I figure many teams would opt for the 1 goalie/5 dmen option, leaving slim pickings on the blueline.

I would definitely protect Bishop. Then probably Phillips, would hate to see him have to pack up and move instead of retiring a Senator. Losing Methot would leave a big hole too though.

It's a tough choice either way.

Protected:

Craig Anderson, G

Erik Karlsson, D
Jared Cowen, D
Chris Phillips, D
Mark Methot, D
Sergei Gonchar, D

Daniel Alfredsson, F
Jason Spezza, F
Milan Michalek, F
Kyle Turris, F
Chris Neil, F
Colin Greening, F
Zack Smith, F
Guillaume Latendresse, F
Peter Regin, F

Unprotected:
Ben Bishop, G
Mike Lundin, D
Erik Condra, F
Kaspars Daugavins, F

Ah. The joys of rebuilding. Don't have to give up anyone of value.
