As an Avalanche fan it pains me to trade Duchene, but Morgan Rielly is the type of player that I would really like to have on the Av's. Duchene is that first line center that could flourish in Toronto.
Toronto adds significantly. Why does Colorado even need Rielly with Barrie and Elliott coming through the pipeline (of course Rielly has the highest potential, but he doesn't fill a need).
I understand we need a centre like MD. But as we are likely looking at a top pick again this year and with the handful of great looking C prospects available, I can't see it being worthwhile to move Reilly ATM.
Leafs fan, really like Rielly, but I also really like Duchene, and he would fill a huge need. I would do Rielly for Duchene straight up, and would consider adding, but it depends what the addition is. What else would Colorado want/need? A 3rd line centre like Bozak or Connolly? A top 6 winger like MacArthur? A dman with size like Franson or Holzer?
I think Rielly plus any one of the above (Bozak, Connolly, MacArthur, Franson or Holzer) would be a pretty fair deal, though not 100% sure if it fully fills a need for the Avs.
Value wise I think Bozak, Mac and Franson all have fairly decent value, Connolly and Holzer a lot less, but I thought I'd include them anyways. The player I'd least like to deal from that group would be Bozak, I think he'd make a very good #3 C for us if we secure a new #1 C.
Did Duchene shot himself in the foot or break every bone in his body. No offence to Morgan Rielly who's looking to be good in the future but as of now the deal is not close value wise.

All four of Rielly Bozak MacArthur and Franson would not get you Duchene.
If Toronto had a blue chip center already in place and desperately needed a defender, I could see them backing down from this. But this is too good of a deal to turn down when you factor in Toronto's depth on defense and lack of depth at center.
The logic is, let Reilly develop in the CHL while the Leafs tank one more year and walk away with one of Mackinnon, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, etc.
Obviously value-wise it's bad for the Avs, but it doesn't make much sense for the Leafs to go about their rebuild like this. Besides, I don't think Duchene is the type of center they need.

Leafs won't tank imo. A perpetual 5th-7th seed is what I see for a few years until Reilly arives.

Putting aside the fact that the Avs wouldn't touch this. Why couldn't Toronto land Duchene and draft a defenseman? Yeah, this draft is deep with centers, but it's not exactly weak on D.

A 5th seed will be good enough to draft one of Barkov/Monahan/Lindholm. The Leafs don't look any better this season than they did last season, and that was with Lupul putting up more points than I expect from him next year. Now maybe Gardiner has a rookie slump, Kessel returns to earth, etc. There's no reason why Toronton can't get another lottery pick.

There is only 1 defenseman in this year's draft that I like more than Reilly, and that's Seth Jones. And if the Leafs were bad enough to get 2nd overall, they could just keep Reilly and have their pick of centermen.
Besides, with Duchene the Leafs probably wouldn't be a lottery team.
Just saying, that's what I'd do if I were Toronto.
For the record, I'm a fan of both teams. I actually think this could be a very doable 1 on 1 trade that's not that far fetched. I certainly do not think that Toronto needs to add.
Here a look at the two:
- Duchene was drafted at the 3 spot, and Reilly at the 5 spot in a very D heavy draft. Similar draft pedigree (I know people on HF take that into consideration)
- Duchene had a very good rookie year, but had regressed a little last year. In my opinion, fellow 2nd rounder Ryan O'Reilly was the better of the two players. Whereas, Reilly's recent performance in the Canada-Russia Challenge, and the way he is playing in the WHL, I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out the be the best D chosen in this year's draft.
For those simple reasons, I certainly don't think that Toronto needs to add to this trade proposal.
Avs would want TML to add significantly, which TOR says no, and Avs say no straight across. And I would rather have a guy like Monahan/Barkov with Rielly instead of Duchene with like a #10 pick.
