Damn you cold weather and the dry air that you bring. You're ruining my hair and skin!

That, or just practice at a nearby lake. I'm planning to finally grab a used pair of skates somewhere and, well, try my best. I'm not even dreaming of playing even amateur/fun hockey this winter. It's been 6 or 7 years since I've last laced up skates and even then only very rarely and although I consider myself a decent skier, it doesn't mean I could actually skate any better than Doug Glatt on his try-out.
Buying roller blades is money I don't have to spend, and how you stake on roller blades isn't the same as you do on skates. At least not close enough for me to be able to justify it.

The issue with skating a lot is two-fold. One, our last winter wasn't even cold enough to skate outside. And two, the time commitment is hit or miss -- I also hate going to skate alone.

I started playing six years ago, and what I did was get a buddy who wanted to play as well. We got skates, sticks, and gloves. Also elbow and knee pads (not hockey pads, just the foam ones). Just get out there and skate.

I'll go skate by myself for an hour easy. It's fun and good exercise.

That is my #1 reason right there. It's just about the only exercise I've found that I really enjoy. I guess I just need to get over my shyness.

I need to lose a good bit of weight before my wedding, and I don't seem to have the self-control to get my eating habits cleared up. So, I want to be able to go do something that I really enjoy, and burn a ton of calories at the same time.

You're in Minnesota, basically there's a pond at just about every city park. Find one, know when people are and aren't there, and go to town.

Yeah, if it gets cold enough, I know exactly where to go. There's a really crappy old octagonal rink that is usually empty, or near enough.

I just need to cross my fingers that it's cold, and then I need to make time.

Edit: and I live in SSP, there are 4, if not 5 open rinks that are a 5-minute drive from me.

Well if you find a way to stop shoveling food down your throat, let me know I literally cannot stop eating. Maybe I just think I eat more than I actually do.

Hockey's a fun social exercise too, met lots of good people that way. Seriously if you have the time and cash, get involved with a league, even a beginner's league.

Yeah, every time I think I'm doing good with food, I just completely lapse. Either through laziness, lack of time, etc.

I've thought of trying to find a league, but I'm a really, really bad skater. Can't stop well, can't turn well, absolutely can't skate backwards, etc.

If you get a chance to go see A Man with the Iron Fists. Go to the theater. Tear up $10. And spend an hour and a half doing something worthwhile.

It was okay. Had lots of blood. You have to be a Quentin fan to like this. And, sadly, no boobs. There is a lot of sex stuff in it, and they show absolutely no boobs. Whole movie is a tease.

It wasn't a Quentin script though, was it? I usually can only dig his stuff if he writes and directs it. Anyway the premise seemed stupid so I was going to skip it anyway.

So much happened in the Walking Dead tonight I wouldn't be surprised if there's no action for the next three episodes.

Yup try Jefferson and Bromley used to be my go to spots. Jefferson is definitely more popular for pickup games and such. You could also try out Harmon, a lot of boot goes on there, but that's usually a have to know somebody booze-fest haha. You just gotta find a buddy that want to skate with ya. I can skate for a good hour just shootin for posts and making passing plays with a bud. Man I'm excited for it to get cold, and it better stay cold this year!!

Since moving up to Duluth I have realized how ****** the outdoor rinks are back in SSP. Many outdoor rinks up here have more than one ice surface, even a minny sort of three vs three rink to go along with the two full sized ones. Quite a few also have zambonis with warming shacks that have concession stands and bathrooms. Its is friggin great. Duluth has got to have the best outdoor hockey in the state. The pickup games here have such a high caliber of play with players coming form the college(former high school players from around the state) + local high schoolers(East, Marshall ect.) + everyone else that is hockey crazy from around here.

Based on this, find a skating class. You can use the outdoor rinks (when it is cold enough) to practice as well but having a base helps your all-around game and you'll find out fast if you want to spend more money on hockey.

Almost every rink has a learn to skate program for adults. Sure, you may feel slightly weird about being the only giant there, but...

I took two back to back L2S classes. 8-weeks in duration. Helps IMMENSELY.
