According to an article at faceoffmagazine dot com, Roy was approached by Pierre Boivin about joining the Habs organization in some capacity. Not sure what to think as he's already in line to work for the Avs as was already reported.
I dont think Roy would accept anything less than an assistant coaching position.
Perhaps, he is one of Carbo's candidates if muller doesn't work out as there is only one assistant coaching position available.
Boivin merely ask roy if he would be willing to be a part of the Wjc tournament and Roy said sure, it is a one time deal that has nothing to do with the nhl club at an nhl level.
Would an NHL team just hand him the GM duties straight out of Junior?
I'm not arguing with you but I just have a tough time seeing that happen unless a team is really desperate.
Plenty of GMs came from other positions. Look at the one we have right now in Montreal. Became GM of the North Stars without any experience. Same for Pierre Lacroix. Same for Serge Savard. Same for a lot of them.

"I talked with (Canadiens president) Pierre Boivin recently concerning the world junior championships. He asked me if I would get involved with the Canadiens organization in relation to that," Roy said.
Eventhough it is concerning the world juniors, make no mistake about the fact that he would be working for the Canadiens organization. There is no mention of a one shot deal. I would imagine, before getting involved with the world juniors for the Canadiens organization Roy would first have to get familiar with Canadiens draft picks. Sounds more to me that it would be a stepping stone for something bigger.
I think it has more to do with reconciliation then anything. Roy hasnt been at the Bell center since he left. They are probably trying to make the first steps at him being part of the bigger circle with all of the ex players.
I really doubt Gainey would want Roy to serve as part of the coaching staff. Roy is far too explosive emotionally, and does not have the calm cool demeanour Gainey looks for in personelle. If you look at the coaches we have right now, Carbonneau, and Jarvis these are very calm people behind the bench. Look at Gainey himself last season, total ice. Roy simply wouldn't mesh in that kind of coaching team.
Secondly, Roy is an obvious choice for Gm, I can't imagine Roy setting himself up as a coach in the NHL, when he could be a Gm instead if he chose to be. He's got the Avs job at the very least at the drop of a hat if he wants it.

I would think the last thing Gainey or Carbo would want is a budding story line in Hamilton, or someone in Mtl. expressing opinions that may not echo those of the majority. Let Roy learn the trade in the Q as he's doing, if you're looking to integrate him into the org. let him grow as a candidate at his own pace on his own dime.
I would gladly welcome Roy back into the organization at pretty much any position as long as it's not as head coach. He's still too much of a loose cannon for that and it would create a circus with the Montreal media. That's the last thing that the team needs.
