56 points for a team in it's first year as a football team, playing @ Alabama who was a National Champ contender, really isn't that bad.

Because then he's trapped playing for below market value in the latter years of the contract. He could just sign a 3 or 4 year deal and then hope to squeeze in another contract before he retires.

Hamilton's best bet would be take a huge 4 or 5 year deal. Then if he is still really good after that deal, sign a deal like Manny signed with the Dodgers.

There's a big difference between being front loaded and smaller in total value.

A 100 million/5 year contract that pays you 90 million up front as opposed to 20 million each year is far more valuable.

What about Melky Cabrera for the Cubs? Probably going to be the best value signing of the offseason. Let's say you sign him to a one year deal and he is hitting .340 again at the TD. Imagine the return the Cubs could get. Plus, he can play CF.

I'd prefer a bunch of other CFers than him. Hell, I'd rather have Swisher in CF.

Swisher is going to want a multi-year deal and wouldn't have much trade value. Melky plays like he has the last two years while on a one year deal and the Cubs could shop him to just about any team.

Waste of money. Having a player like him for one year will win us a handful more games, which would be the difference, maybe, between 4th in the Central instead of 5th. We're not going to need quality guys like that to short term contracts for at least 2-3 more years.

I have passionately hated Melky since he was a Yankee... although must of that hate comes from Yankees fans, and not necessarily Melky... but I still hate him nonetheless.

I thought I made myself clear...I don't expect the Cubs to make any signing without the intention of trading said player if they play well. Melky fits that bill.

Would I like for us to look at guys that can help when we are good? Sure. I don't think we will though. They have spoken against multi-year deals, against competing (at least paying for it), so I don't see us signing any big contracts. If this coming season had a chance of being "the year", I wouldn't want Melky because of his stained reputation.

I'm not really sure that Melky is looking for a 1 year deal... is he? If he is, I guess I could put my hate aside and root for him for a year. Definitely not for 4-5 years, though.

I don't think he has any choice but to sign a 1 year deal, have a great year, don't get hit with another suspension and then cash in. He's only 27 or 28. And like I said, you move him at the TD, so we watch the ******* for 3-4 months, hopefully he rakes, then we ship him out for a high end prospect.

So.... sign a player to a one year deal with the intention of trading him later in the year to another team knowing that he'd be gone at the end of the year regardless?

Not seeing it happening. If our sole ambition is to sign a guy to trade for prospects, I don't see the Cubs being willing to pay enough to sign him over a team that wants him for longer for legitimate playoff contention to start out the season.

Fine, sign him and Haren to one year show me deals... and bring back Dempster for 2-3 years. Then get JP Howell. See if maybe you can stick in the race and then if not, trade his ass.

I've been preaching his name for a long long time. Been a big fan even before he blew his arm out.

I think we all want Howell. He's probably going to get a crazy deal from a big market team.

Every player would prefer a front loaded deal...a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. Owners like back loaded deals for the same reason.

My point was that he would rather take a shorter deal with the opportunity to earn another contract before he retires than a long deal where he plays the last few years for well below market value.

Leak of the SOX new seating chart

Looks like they finally figured it out. Jack up the prices on the seats you're guaranteed to sell, lower level infield, and make the lower rows in those sections even more. Then make the tickets no one buys, corners on both levels, dirt cheap.

It would be hilarious if the stands were packed but the lower bowl was half full at best.

I sure as hell wouldn't buy lower bowl tickets. You know during the week, and on a lot of weekends you can get nose bleeders and just sneak down...
