OHL's Battalion Heading to North Bay

http://www.tsn.ca/chl/story/?id=408931

The writing's been on the wall on this one for a while. Too bad as there some pretty good teams in Brampton recently (not this year at least).

We'll see how the season tickets drive goes. Drive to 2?

They'll probably change the name to the Trappers.

Good to see OHL hockey return to North Bay. I hope it is both a success and in turn, inspires similar sized cities to also get their act together. There is no reason why Cornwall, Chatham, and Brantford could not host teams. Even Timmins and Thunder Bay, if a travel subsidy could be arranged.

At the same time, it is unfortunate to see another GTA major junior team relocate. Much like in Montreal, it is very difficult for these teams to compete directly against higher end entertainment options and even moreso when they aren't rooted in the community (like the Generals are). Hopefully the Battalion leaving opens up some extra market share for whatever their calling the Mississauga franchise these days. The eastern GTA has the Generals, there is no reason why the western GTA should not be able to support an OHL franchise.

I wonder if it becomes a team that no one wants to report to.

I hope not. North Bay Battalion sounds pretty cool.

I imagine at this point they will either keep the Battalion moniker due to North Bay's strong military presence, our revive the beloved Centennials brand.

I can't see them missing both of those opportunities and picking a completely new identity.

That's unfortunate, I've gone to a few games after work. North Bay would surely support them. I'd like them to move to Hamilton but really there's no place for them to play that would make sense.

Sounds like a great idea.

This means I need to get to a Battalion game this year.

Now the question is, is this the team that is supposedly been approaching Hamilton for relocation or are we going to possibly see two franchises shift for next year?

I don't keep up as much with OHL as I used to, while I think it's great that North Bay gets a team back, I feel bad for Brampton fans (or any city) losing their team.

You shouldn't. They had horrible attendance. This isn't the Phoenix Coyotes, where the next closest equivalent team is several hours away by car.

Hopefully this helps the Mississauga team (who will hopefully change their name soon) draw better crowds.

Isn't it a bit early to announce a relocation like this? Still a lot of the season to go and one would think that there'd be at least a decent number of folks that just say "screw you" to the team for leaving and just stop going.

Not sure how reliable it is but...

Brampton is the worst draw in the league.

Folks in Brampton said "screw you" a long time ago.

Not a fan of the Steelheads name?

Brampton, the Glendale of Canadian junior hockey...

Interesting that Mississauga is the second worst. It would seem that a Hamilton junior squad would be easily in the top 5.

You've got to get away from the GTA to be successful in the OHL. The only reason Oshawa does so well is their long history and the fact that they are as far as you can get from Toronto, while still being in the GTA.

Frankly I am not convinced a Hamilton team would do much better than the Brampton or Mississauga, but then, the Bulldogs do alright.

I would much rather see a team in Brantford than Hamilton.

They do alright by OHL standards. This year has been remarkable for them, averageing a franchise high of 5700 so far (which would put it just behind Windsor and be number 5). During the worst years, they would have attendence comparable with Oshawa and The Soo. I've heard enough annecdotal evidence to suggest that there is a bigger appetite in Hamilton in for junior than the AHL...

Glad to see the OHL back in North Bay! Was a sad day when the Cents left. The Soo always had a great rivalry with them, along with Sudbury.

One more northern team makes the trip more alluring for visiting fans as well.

The Soo is a bit far, but a North Bay, Sudbury road trip weekend is very doable.

Probably doesn't help when you have Bramptons and Mississaugas arenas about 10 minutes apart. I would have to assume this will help Mississaugas draw.
