It's close, I think they're quite close in terms of on ice value. Phaneuf's contract is a bit better, but 600k shouldn't really be enough to change the answer. Lean towards Phaneuf (and voted for him) due to his age.
Close. Campbell is the better passer/playmaker, and makes fewer mistakes, but Phaneuf is much more physical, with a much better shot. I personally think Campbell is a touch better, but I'd put the two on a similar tier, just with very different games.
It's hard to make the comparison. Campbell has put up similar offensive numbers in his career (43points or more x4) but has never been the goalscoring dman that Phaneuf is.
Campbell is far better defensively. Dion is far more physical. Campbell is the better skater/passer. Dion has the better shot. Both have leadership qualities (different style).
I guess if you asked me who i'd want in a 7 game series I would take Campbell.
Campbell is far better defensively?
Corsi Rel Qoc: 1.399 (1st on team and 10th in the league among defensemen)
QoC: 0.090 (1st on team and 3rd in the league among defensemen)
SH TOI/G: 2:30, 2nd on team by 8 seconds
Corsi Rel QoC: 0.755 (3rd on team and not in the top 50 among defensemen)
QoC: 0.026 (4th on team and not in the top 50 among defensemen)
SH TOI/G 1:16, 7th on the team, 1:39 below team leader
I guess Mike Weaver, Jason Garrison and Dmitry Kulikov must be black holes defensively, because that would be the only explanation for someone as good defensively as Campbell getting such easy minutes.
It's sad how underrated Phaneuf is defensively over here.
I think skill-wise, they are pretty near a wash. But I think Dion's demeanor on the ice gives him the edge here.
Just looking at skill, Campbell seems an easy pick. Skating, passing, moving the puck, etc... he looks to have a solid advantage over Phaneuf. Where Phaneuf closes the gap is with his shot, defense, and physical presence. I think you'd be hard-pressed to show that Phaneuf can match Campbell in pure skill.
