Shin pads protect the knees from head-on impact. They don't protect the joint of course, kind of like a helmet doesn't prevent concussions. I usually just wear volleyball style shin pads and elbow pads. If you're really clumsy, think about a helmet. A friend of mine broke his elbow and got a concussion just skating out on the ponds. I've never gotten hurt though.

About the only gear that I wear when I go out and stand in net for the neighborhood kids during the winter are;
Goalie Leg pads.
Inline Girdle with built in cup.
(Catcher and Blocker)
I don't even bother with the goalie mask for this. Just put my stocking cap on, impact resistant sunglasses and a leather biker jacket that is also insulated well. After the first couple of times, I added the inline girdle to the mix because one of the kids nailed me in the nuts with a shot. Who knew a 6 year old could elevate the puck like that?
When I want to skate, all I have to do is drop the leg pads and put on a pair of gloves. Fun times...
This year, my neighbor and I want to go a bit more high tech with our swamp set up. Trying to figure out which one of us is going to buy the chains for the rider since my plow attachment fits on either of our mowers.
Wife and I are voting after work and using it as an excuse to both take off of work early. Go to polling place and then five minutes later (seriously doesn't take us long up in Rogers) and then off to Albertville to get me a new jacket.
Although... I vote with my principles, which means that I throw mine away... /sigh Damned two party only system...
