NHL released their statement prematurely, talks still ongoing. Good I suppose. Longer the better?

I have a feeling they'll reach a deal tonight but wait until tomorrow to announce it. If they announce the news tonight, it'll get buried. If talks today yield nothing, I'm worried the season is toast.

A deal is not likely to get done tonight.

The longer the meet the better. Lebrun said it would probably end 11 EST

It's good. This is what they should have been doing on Sept. 16 if they wanted a pre season to happen

I would have to say this is good news. No peacocking from either side, marathon negotiating sessions...they're definitely finding some common ground on at least a few issues.

Instead they thought they would try to out wait each other out and hope they cave, that clearly didn't happen, and here we are today. I think it's pretty clear now both sides realize the lockout is only hurting the NHL (who knew?) so they're both trying to just get a deal done.

All it takes is for one side to really insult the other and it could be lights out.

While true, I hope the rumors that both sides are pressuring to get a deal done is true. It's somewhat comforting to know that underneath all this rhetoric, there are people on both sides who just want to find a compromise and start playing hockey again.

Both sides are feeling heat because the longer this lockout goes, it just hurts BOTH of their pockets, plus the fans being ticked off at both sides is nothing positive either, and could hurt revenue down the road as well.

They just want a deal done soon so they can get as many million as they can before they lose it.

Get a deal done now and they'll probably play 70 games or try to extend the season for all 82 (unlikely but never know what the NHL might try).

We'll know a hell of a lot more on whether or not we're looking at a possible deal by the weekend or the beginning of next week. If these meetings are still taking place by then, they've obviously got traction. If not, I expect it to fall apart sooner than that.

Right now I'm very, very cautiously optimistic.

If a deal is done by the weekend, I hope to see no more than 66 games.

If they get a deal done to start the season by December 1st I'd bet on 70 games.

more games = condensed schedule = less rest time = tired players = more injuries = lower standard of play

Some tidbits from Friedman...

Willingness to negotiate. First step in what (hopefully) is a lengthy endgame.

Will be an interesting day in talks with "make-whole" becoming part of discussion. Best news about yesterday was both sides saw more...

Sounds like today is where some of the big items such as "make whole" will be on the agenda.

Yeah. If they want to play 70+ games I have no problem with that, but they'd have to finish the regular season in May which they probably aren't too peachy about.

No one knows. It's all under wraps, but apparently they're going to discuss "make whole" today.

I understand that, but to me it's not something I would hope against. To me I'm in want of a minimum number of games, and however many they add on to such minimum wouldn't matter so long as the minimum amount of games was met or surpassed.

More games means more hockey to watch, hockey that has been missed, can be had. It's not like it only effects the Canucks.

I'd rather have less more intense, better quality games.

Just keep the same kind of schedule in terms of average games per week as a normal schedule. There will still be lots of hockey to watch if they start before the new year.
