19. Some other things to look out for: teams can only insure contracts for seven years. Is that a length the league and players would be comfortable with?

20. Wouldn't be surprised if salary arbitration continues in its current form. Under the NHL's proposal, you're almost encouraging more contract stalemates like the one between Drew Doughty and the Kings. No one needs that.
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opin...l-players.html

The NHL proposal has players signing 2 year ELCs and the players are arb eligible after 5 years. What happens with years 3,4 and 5? The player has zero leverage.

Don't think much progress was made -- if any. But, "make-whole" -- the protection of contracts and the route to 50/50 -- is the key...

To this deal. When/if that comes together (and it won't be easy) things will start to fall into place.

What is the problem with 7 years? Come on, that one is easy.

Sounds like an opinion rather than fact regarding progress or not.

couldnt the players get more of the revenue in the first few years and then less later on so that in the end it comes out to 50/50 and the players still keep their current guaranteed contract money?

Realistically it's still probably 3+ weeks before a season could start, so hopefully they can all heal up by then.

I'm curious about Gaborik's status, haven't heard anything about him. A December 1st start would be pretty close to his return date

Journalists expose stuff like this. Brooks is biased but the league is screwed up. From the backlash over sakic, the igjnla threats, imposing the cba then crying over it, hiding revenue for accounting. Bettman is a mess with expansion, southern markets, scripted lockouts, ziggy palffy meddling... how do you not take the players side or at the least not allow for a voice in their behalf?

My respect towards Lundqvist has been just getting lower and lower during this lockout.

But Im talking specifically about Brooks' constant pro-union/anti-ownership stances. I didnt think that'd be allowed within 500 feet of a Rupert Murdoch owned entity.

It kind of sounds like he couldn't get a job in the SEL and is now complaining about that too.

Because some people realize its tough work to own/operate a business, and theres a lot of risk involved.

The players play hockey, go home, and get paid.

Does the SEL still have the provision where they're not letting in NHL players? I haven't been following that at all, but if so I don't think he's really whining. I'm sure a player as good as Hank would have teams lined up to sign him, and as a product of the SEL I can understand why he thinks it's a bad idea to let every other European league benefit from NHL players playing while the SEL isn't.

If they got rid of that provision, though, then maybe he is just crying.

You don't follow many players on twitter if you think they are lacking a voice.

As for the "imposing the cba then crying over it" I actually have heard very little crying from the owners' side. They don't want to keep the CBA that they (along with the players) agreed to 7 years ago, and they have no obligation to. Players aren't expected to play under the terms of a contract that's expired, why should the owners?

What are the Sakic and Iginla incidents you are referring to?

At the end of this lockout Brooks will have to stand in/outside of countless locker-rooms waiting for a quote/sound byte from PLAYERS... not an owner.

That is why he has an overly player-bias. He wouldn't have a job if he wrote how the owners are right and players should just accept it. None of them would piss on him if he were on fire after that.

True, but Brooks has been known to break a big story or two, and those come from management. How often does a player say something even remotely interesting?

How often has he had face time with Dolan?

Sather, yes... but not Dolan, not often anyway.

I see what you're saying but the Players are his (and every other reporter, analyst, etc. in every sport) bread and butter.

Was thinking the same thing - have no idea.

But I would let the league do whatever they wanted to me to enjoy their fame and fortune just from playing the game of hockey.
