They can't really do this. He is an RFA. He can sign a deal and force their hand.

Lets say very hypothtically that Benn wants to move on but Dallas has little interest in dealing him. Suppose Edmonton was the prefered destination. Edmonton offered 4 years @$6M per year the compensation is a 1st a 2nd and a 3rd. For Benn that is a very good deal.

Now if Dallas matches Benn stays but gets top dollars and is a UFA at the end of his deal. If he is aggravated with the organization they could have a digruntled player on their hands who will not stick around longterm. THe smart move for Dallas might be to bite the bullet and then deal him before his contact expires.

Alternatively you may get them to listen to a trade offer that is better for them than the three picks.

Of course all of this is very hypothetical becasue for all we know Benn has 0 interest in leaving Dallas or coming to the Oilers.

Just a little taste of what Benn brings.

I doubt he comes our way, but man would that be great for us if he did.
All I seen was a selfish player who never passed the puck once in that video.

He did pass the puck once if you watch it. That said why would he pass it off on odd man breaks when he has a shot like that? Also, I guess hits do nothing for you? Or how about at 26 seconds of the video? We might have one guy that has the strength to pull that off and that's Harski.

I like Benn and I'd be okay with an offersheet for him but I wouldn't give up any of the big 4 in a trade, though.

Does anyone's opinion of picking up jay Bo change if we can trade Whitney? I'm against jaybo now because we would have the softest d in the league but if we can get a shutdown 4-5 with some nasty to his game I would change my opinion. Hope Whitney has a good start and dump him before his club foot acts up.

I don't mind JBo on the team, but if we acquire him as the solution to our need for a top-2 guy, that's a big problem.

A Jaybo trade is only a "wow" if we get him for dirt cheap. I wouldn't even want to give up Gagner or Paajarvi for him.

Benn is not going to be traded to EDM, explain to me how EDM can afford to pay 6mil a year to Hall, Eberle, RNH, Yak and Benn. That would be 30 mil on 5 players, there is no way that is going to happen.

As for JBo I would love to get him here for the next 2 yrs to see how he does. That is the type of wow factor Stauffer was talking about. It is either going to be a dman or a 2C as that is what we need on this team.

What do you think it would take to get JBo.

Pretty easily actually, RNH won't get that kind of coin until the '14-15 season and Nail won't until at least the '15-16 season and maybe even the year after if the strike lasts all season.

So:

Buy out Horcoff ($5.5 million = gone)

Don't be stupid and trade for Luongo

Don't add any other big contracts (over $5 million)

We wouldn't be paying all 5 guys that coin until '15-16 at the earliest and I'd assume that as long as this lockout doesn't decimate the fan support that the cap would be higher then than it is now making it easier to accomplish.

Have you been reading the thread/ know Stauffers hints?

I think we need a sticky at the top of each page
We are not trading an A player (RNH, Schultz, Hall, ect) or a B player (Gagner, Hemsky, Marincin, ect)

It doesn't matter about that, that is 30 mil for 5 players, to have a legit defensive core you won't have enough money. Good try it won't happen.

Why? He would thrive in Edmonton as a top-2 defender. He's a big minutes guy who would benefit from the firepower we have.

If Bouw is the WOW factor guy Stauffer is talking about, I'll say what I said in the summer: Whitney's headed the other way.

Jay Bouwmeester for Ryan Whitney and Curtis Hamilton?

So if the cap is at $80 million by then what's the problem? We're talking possibly 4 years from now. We could have $36 million tied up in those 5 and Schultz and we'd be left with $44 million for 16 players or an average of $2.75 million, some of those players would inevitably be paid considerably less (4th liners/PB guys/6th/7th D)

Harski($3 million)-RNH-Nail
Hall-Benn-Eberle

That's $33 million for our top 6.

$2-$3.5-$2

$7.5 million for our 3rd line

$1.25-$1.25-$1.25

$3.75 million on our 4th line

$0.8-$0.8

$1.6 million on our PB forwards

Total for our forwards = $45.85 million

$6-Schultz ($6 million)
Smid ($4)-Petry ($4)
$3-$2
$1

That's $26 million for D and $71.85 for our skaters. That leaves $8.15 million for goaltending. That is of course assuming that we have another D worth paying $6 million to. It could just as easily be Klefbom on his ELC making considerably less.

It seems to be a common theme that many posters have, that the cap will stay at $60M forever.

Whitney will never be healthy again. I would do the deal, at least we get back a healthy soft D man.

I really like Whitney, I just don't see him staying healthy.
