All top 10 picks/will likely be top 10 in the case of Pulock.

Seen that way, definitely.

But I was more referring to the two rosters the WHL have.

I'd take Ouellet before Siemens, Lowe and Wotherspoon.

Does this mean we are going to hear Drouin to Habs rumors every summer after another team drafts him before us?

We sucked for Galchenyuk, maybe we will ruin for Drouin and not have to go through the pain of another team drafting him before us? Well, it's not impossible, anyway. (Total non-tanker here, but even if there is a season, it's so hard to predict where we'll be drafting, Drouin could still be in our wheelhouse on draft day. Odds are still against, but not 30:1... maybe 5:1 or 10:1-ish?)

Well if we don't have a season, we likely won't get as lucky as the last lottery draft. Probably end up in the 20s.

Well, we would need to suck, but maybe not as much as last year.

All these players could probably go before Drouin depending on team need.

Nathan MacKinon
Seth Jones
Sean Monahan
Elias Lindholm
Aleksander Barkov

These players could also go at around the 5-10 range

Hunter Shinkaruk
Rasmus Ristolainen
Ryan Pulock
Curtis Lazar

We have to hope he somewhat slips..

You never know! Plus maybe if we ended up somewhere just outside the top 10 we could offer a team one of our 2nd round picks along with our 1st rounder to move up a few spots and get Drouin.

Most of the move-up options like that are a bit later on, though, not something that gets to the top-10.

Anyway, it's a good draft year, so we're probably looking at a good player no matter what, of course.

Bergevin is the only GM in a while to actually look like he has a plan for the future. The way I see it, he keeps an average team, so we have another blue chip prospect while signing the young core players and just waiting for big contract to end(Gomez,Gionta,Kaberle..) to build a competitive team. I think its the right way to do it.

Bergevin has been in charge for less than 6 months, he has yet to make an impact on team. He can thank Gauthier and Gainey for setting the table for the future for him!

The Habs have already had a team with good defence, goalie(Theodore)star forward (Koivu) with assorted top six wingers and scratched their way only to lose to the eventual SC's.I would hope that the Chicago SC gives enough insight to the depth needed to win the SC.Bergevin's actions since joining the Habs shows that he has his priorities in order, taking care of the farm system being paramount, drafting(Scouting Team enlarged)and signing character players that stand up for their teammates. The next order of business is recruiting the best young talent available to help the team long term. The Habs aren't winning any SC's for at least three years,so why take on costly UFA's that will just insure the draft picks the team gets are in the teens instead of where the team should be.Doing it the right way may be difficult for a couple of years but well worth the wait, who knows Connor McDavid could end up being a Hab.The Habs would be a definite contender with Galchenyuk and McDavid lining up alongside Price,Subban,Pacioretty,Hudon,Bozon,Collberg and our vaunted defence in four years. The Habs haven't had the benefit of two top five picks in thirty years,it's about time our GM sees the needs and how to get them.

Looking at the quality of next years draft I have to say I hope Bergevin finds a way to end up with a top ten pick. In a way I'm more terrified of the Habs fighting for a bubble playoff spot, and the temptation to get better now that comes with it, than I am of having another terrible year. Gally is just another level of prospect than our mid-late first rounders from recent years. Nothing against Leblanc, Tinordi or Beaulieu, but elite talent is elite for a reason, and top 3-5 draft picks is the most likely way to get it into your org.

Not advocating to tank, just saying if the team isn't really competitive, I think we're much better off accepting short term suffering and looking to a brighter future. The fact that the Bulldogs are stocked with interesting young talent and almost none of it is close to NHL-ready only reinforces that feeling for me. This is the time to build a winner from the ground up. Think about adding another center of Gally's calibre to the org, and where we might be in three years as a result. Been a long, long time....

Yeah, but how do you pronounce "ruin", then? It's rew-an. Take whatever accent you want, you can make it work.

Agreed. The only reason not to advocate this method of re-build is if all our young guys coming up, the Leblanc's , Gallaghers, etc., overperform, considering where they were drafted. What we have done for years is overpay for players to fill in for our top draft pick's failings. Instead of just conceding the fact that, as you said, the 10-20 1st round pick was as much a shot in the dark as almost any round, that the team needed a real talent to jumpstart the franchise, they continued to wallow in this state of patch-up and mediocrity. The best GM's can look at their franchise and know when's the time to go for it, and alternately, when's the time to be patient. Bergevin should be able to look at this year's squad and say to himself, "this is surely the time to be patient."
