You're making quite an assumption there.

You have no idea what is going to be in the new CBA about buyouts, etc, so you can't say they might never have another chance.

I suppose you're assuming there's a one-time, use-it-or-lose-it provision. We don't know that to be the case, or even that it's more likely than not. Under the NBA's CBA, teams can use the amnesty buyout once during the life of the CBA, and it did not have to be immediately after the ratification of the CBA--it just has to be before the 2015-16 season.

Also, buying him out now makes zero fiscal sense for the Sabres. Leino's already collected $15m (!) from the team for one season of play: $6m for 2011-12, $4.5m signing bonus on 7/1/11, $4.5m signing bonus on 7/1/12. For that money, they should give him more than just one season to prove himself in Buffalo. Second, maybe you don't care because it isn't your money, but the Sabres would likely still be on the hook for the remainder of money owed (less the compensation earned from other teams during the period that he would have otherwise been under contract with the Sabres). Even being generous and assuming he would earn $8m-10m from other teams during that period, he would've earned approximately $19m-$21m for one season with the Sabres.

He certainly underwhelmed and underperformed last season, but he's not Scott Gomez. Give him another season or two before even considering it.

The CBA thread in the business section is a **** fest. People are so up and down. I guess they don't understand how negotiations work. It isn't going to be all sunshines and rainbows.

The NHL Players' Association made two offers during Wednesday's negotiating session, a source told ESPNNewYork.com, and is awaiting the league's response during Thursday's talks.

A source told ESPN.com that the NHLPA's "Make-Whole" proposal would see the players' share drop to 50-50 of revenues by Year 3 based on "regular" growth, meaning there would be a "phase-in" element.
Pierre LeBrun puts it best on his twitter:

A "scary" thought is that since we are so center deprived/depleted these days, Ville might be considered experienced enough to be given another try at the position.

Hoping we might be seeing Sabre hockey soon...........

They don't have to take it.

But they CANNOT reject it out of hand.

The talks won't end with a CBA tonight, but they sure as heck could completely break down if the owners tells the NHLPA to take these offers and shove em.

Agreed. If either party breaks off and walks away it'll be bad.

I'll stay hopeful for now...maybe it's dinner time, maybe a break was needed, maybe they need to take a inside look at something new.

Like Dubi Doo (darcy regier on the main board?) says, it's a negotiation

Nothing new. Both sides said they were still talking and would keep talking.

Can't really take this in a bad way at all.

I get the sense they're pumping the breaks a little, but they haven't wrecked the car at least. Sounds like there's still a lot of work to be done, but hey, at least they're willing to get together again.

Haha

It's true, though. If i got emotional for every tweet i've read the past two days i would look 40 years older.

Not very promising that Fehr's player memo leaked, mostly because now the media is blabbing about it and driving rampant speculation.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Right now plan is for NHL and NHLPA not to meet again tonight, but perhaps reconvene tomorrow. However, told that could possibly change

@reporterchris: Ted Leonsis, Craig Leipold and Jeremy Jacobs just left the building with suitcases.

Jeremy Jacobs killed the NHL. Greedy POS.

So from what I've gleaned from the CBA thread, the NHL has offered to pay all current salaries in full over the next three years. It thats the case this should be over. But now apparently Fehr wants full salaries paid for the shortened season. If that's the case he can **** rIght off.

Edit: here's the article that spells all
this out: http://m.startribune.com/news/?id=178216921&c=y

Wasn't going to post in the OT, but a few posts ago my post count was the capacity of the *** Center.

That made me think of hockey.

That made me sad.

Come on, good news....
