Another poor performance from RIT...a 2-2 draw at AIC. I'm not overly confident in any phase of their game right now except maybe the PP against bad teams. The PK is atrocious, they're too much along the perimeter on offense...don't even get me started on the defense.

Ugh.

Senior Giancarlo Iuorio stunned the UConn Huskies with three goals to push the Niagara men's hockey team to a 3-0 victory on Friday evening in front of a boisterous crowd at Dwyer Arena.

Iuorio tallied a goal in the opening minute of play and added another two quick goals in the second stanza to give the Purple Eagles (3-2-2; 2-0-0 AHA) its second win in two games over AHA foes. This was the senior’s first hat-trick of his career.

Senior Marc Zanette also had a three-point night for NU, contributing three helpers on the night while junior Ryan Murphy added two assists. Junior goaltender Carsen Chubak pushed aside 34 UConn (0-3-1; 0-2-0 AHA) shots for his second shutout of the season.

The Purple Eagles look to sweep the series against the Huskies tomorrow. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 pm.

To follow up on post #75: Just got home from the Niagara game v. Connecticut. The Purple Eagles threw a goose egg at the Huskies 3-0. Giancarlo Iuorio picked up all three goals...one with about 50 seconds gone in the first off a cleared puck by the Huskies goalie, and the other 2 in the 2nd...one of them shorthanded. U Conn looked half a step slower than Niagara did all night long.

The Niagara men's hockey team swept UConn with its second straight blank slate against its AHA opponent, dropping the Huskies, 5-0 on Saturday evening.

Giancarlo Iuorio continued his scoring streak with two tallies tonight to rack up his total to a team-leading 10 goals on the season. Ryan Murphy had a three-point night a goal and two helpers, while Jeff Hannan added two assists for the night and freshman Matt Chartrain contributed a goal and an assist.

NU goaltender Carsen Chubak continued his hot streak between the pipes, stopping 26 UConn looks on net for his second straight shutout, and third of the season.

The Griffs are now 1-4-2 on the season, while the Golden Knights are 0-4-2.

Sophomore Tyler Wiseman led the Griffs with two goals on the afternoon, while Mitch McCrank added a tally for Canisius. Junior Tony Capobianco recorded 30 saves to anchor the Canisius defense on the afternoon.

The teams are set to wrap up the two-game series this afternoon at 3:05 pm at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Junior goaltender Josh Watson (Lititz, PA) stopped all 19 shots he faced for his first collegiate shutout, as the RIT men's hockey team (2-4-1, 1-1-1 AHA) blanked American International (2-4-1, 0-2-1 AHA) 3-0 at the Olympia Ice Center on Saturday evening.

Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario), Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD), Chris Saracino (St. Louis, MO) scored for the Tigers, who out-shot American International, 36-19, including 27-11 over the final two periods. Saracino added an assist for a multi-point effort.

The win snapped RIT's five-game winless streak.

For the second-straight afternoon, the Canisius College hockey team played to a draw against Clarkson, with the teams skating to a 2-2 tie at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Sunday. The Griffs are now 1-4-3 on the season, while the Golden Knights are 0-4-3. Sophomores Doug Beck and Tyler Wiseman each netted goals for the Griffs with junior Tony Capobianco recording 29 saves in net.

The Griffs now turn their focus to Atlantic Hockey play, squaring off with conference rival Robert Morris on Friday. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET. (LS: Canisius then plays at RIT on Saturday - also scheduled 7:05 pm ET. That game will be televised LIVE on both TWC Sports Channel Buffalo and TWC Sports Channel Rochester.)

Chubak finds a zone in goal for Atlantic Hockey-leading Niagara
By Chris Lerch • Atlantic Hockey Columnist • Nov. 8, 2012

In what is already turning into an another “on any given night” season, Niagara has managed to fly above the fray, opening 3-0 in league play after beating contenders Connecticut and Mercyhurst by a combined score of 10-1.

Most of the damage inflicted by the Purple Eagles was last weekend, when they beat the Huskies 3-0 and 5-0. “Friday was a closer game [than 3-0] and Saturday we really played well,” Niagara coach Dave Burkholder said. “It all starts and ends with Carsen [Chubak].”

The junior goalie had back-to-back shutouts and already has three on the season. He’s currently first in the nation in save percentage (.962) and second in goals against average (1.23). “He’s in a zone right now, both in games and in practice,” Burkholder said.

Skirving commits to RIT:
Quote:
The Sioux Falls Stampede are proud to announce that forward Todd Skirving has committed to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for the 2013-14 season. He becomes the 11th Stampede player to commit to a Division I program this season.

Skirving is one of the hottest players in the USHL, earning back-to-back USHL Forward of the Week honors.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native has recorded eight goals in his last four games and leads the team in goals scored with nine. He is also a +3 during that stretch. He is currently second on the team in scoring with 13 points (9g, 4a) in 12 games. Skirving is in his second season with the club after posting 17 goals last year.

I love getting Fox Sports Atlantic, Pacific and Central. See teams like Minnesota and North Dakota a lot. Not a big hockey fan but because Cornell is down the road I keep tabs. Which reminds me CRIME WARNER...quit snubbing me. Show a Cornell game already, 4th in the nation and nothing!

Mair getting his foot in the coaching door at Canisius -

As director of player development, the former NHLer is trying to pass on what he learned from skilled coaches.

By Dan Hickling • SUNYAC Columnist • Nov. 6, 2012

BUFFALO, N.Y. — There are five rookies featured on the Canisius hockey roster, or an even half dozen, if you count Adam Mair. However, unlike the others, Mair is anything but your standard freshman.

For one thing, there are all those miles racked up on a 33-year-old body that boasts a collection of suture zippers and a rearrangement of knuckles and nose. For another, there are the 618 regular season games Mair logged in the NHL, which for the moment (we’re watching you, Cory Conacher) is 618 more big-league tilts than have ever been played by all the Golden Griffins players in history.

Still, there are those things that Mair shares with all the present-day Griffs players. The most important is that sense of starting something new and exciting. And that’s why, after being brought aboard by Canisius coach Dave Smith as the Griffs’ volunteer director of player development, Mair feels right at home among all those youngsters.

“There is a little bit of a different dynamic,” said Mair, whose duties include both on-ice and video instruction. “But the goal remains the same. My goal [as an assistant] is the same as Dave’s goal is as the head coach of the program, is the same goal as our captain Torrey Lindsay. And that’s to win hockey games.

“We’re on the same team. And to that degree, I don’t think there is a divide. We perform different jobs, just like a goalie performs a different job than a defenseman. We [the coaches] were all players and we’re still players in our heads. And maybe we relate to our [guys] as older players or coaches because that’s the role we’re in. But the goal remains the same, and that’s to win hockey games.”

ROCHESTER, NY - The Canisius College hockey team battled for 60 minutes on Saturday night to earn a 6-3 victory at RIT - the team's first win in Rochester over its conference foe since 2007. With the win, the Griffs improve to 2-5-3 on the season and 1-1-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Tigers drop to 2-6-1 and 1-3-1 in league play.

Junior Patrick Sullivan led the Griffs with a personal-best three points on the night, netting his first career multi-goal game - including the game-winning third-period tally - and adding an assist. Senior Preston Shupe, juniors Kyle Gibbons and Taylor Law and sophomore Mitch McCrank also added a goal for the Griffs in the winning effort. Junior Tony Capobianco recorded 36 saves to earn his first victory of the 2012-13 campaign.

Canisius continues Atlantic Hockey play next weekend, hosting Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara on Friday. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET. (LS: Yours truly plans to be in attendence.)

ROCHESTER, NY – Canisius (2-5-3, 1-1-1 AHA) scored three unaswered goals in the third period to hand the RIT men’s hockey team (2-6-1, 1-3-1 AHA) its third straight home loss to start the 2012-13 season, 6-3 in front of a sellout crowd at Ritter Arena on Saturday evening.

With the game tied at 3-3, Patrick Sullivan stole the puck away from a Tiger defenseman behind the RIT net, wheeled out in front and took a bad angle shot that got through RIT goaltender Josh Watson (Lititz, PA) to the short side with 12:32 left to give the Golden Griffins the 4-3 lead. RIT pressured, but could not get the tying goal. Preston Shupe and Mitch McCrank added empty-net tallies in the final 1:25 to seal the win.

Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD) led the Tigers with a career-high three points on a goal and two assists. He now has a team-best 11 points in eight games and nine points (5-4-9) over a six-game point-scoring streak. Jeff Smith (Spokane, WA) and Chris Saracino (St. Louis, MO) also scored for the Tigers. In net, Watson made 30 saves to fall to 2-3-0.

RIT is back in action next Saturday and Sunday, as they travel to Holy Cross to play a pair of afternoon games. Both contests begin at 3:05 pm ET.

RIT sucks. They suck hard. They're looking at fighting for a first round home series (finishing 5 through 8)...they have little shot at a bye unless things switch substantially.

BUFFALO, NY - The Niagara men’s hockey team were able to take advantage of several key scoring opportunities to come out with the 2-1 win against cross-town rival the Canisius Golden Griffins on Friday evening at Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Despite being outshot 32-23 by the Griffs (2-6-3; 1-2-1 AHA), the Purple Eagle (7-2-3; 6-0-0 AHA) defense and the stellar play of NU keeper Carsen Chubak helped Niagara become owners of the conference’s longest unbeaten streak of eight games, which is also second longest in the nation right now. During this stretch, Niagara has posted four shutouts and outscored its opponents 28-9. Chubak recorded 31 saves on the night to improve his record to 7-1-3.

The Purple Eagles return to Monteagle Ridge tonight to begin their four-game homestand with a bout against the Robert Morris Colonials in Niagara's sixth-straight AHA contest. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 pm.

Update - ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The historic season of the Niagara men’s soccer team came to an unfortunate close on Thursday evening, as the Purple Eagles suffered a 3-1 loss to the University of Michigan in the NCAA tournament at U-M Soccer Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Three scores from Michigan's Fabio Pereira in the second half, including two penalty kick markers, led to the conclusion of a season that saw the Purple Eagles earn their first berth into the NCAA tournament in program history. With the loss, Niagara concludes its season with a 13-2-4 mark.

The Purple Eagles broke the scoreless game as the duo of senior Bryan Da Cruz and sophomore Micah Paulino, who combined for the game-winning tally in the MAAC finals, teamed up again to give NU the 1-0 lead. Paulino fed a through ball to Da Cruz who ripped a shot past Michigan keeper Adam Grinwis, marking sixth tally of the season, and Paulino’s fourth assist.
