If you take the top 9 picks from last year (your second picks cut off at 10...who isn't a starter but pick 11 is). You see 6 players that are now starters.
With Silva/De Leon/Berry all having near Mattocks like impacts. Same with Hedges at 11. With a few other players later on in the draft having nice impacts as well, like Cascio/Maund/Meyer/Meara (who was a second round pick).
So in conclusion....I think Van could grab a CB and a wide midfielder that can compete for starting spots day one with their picks.
Silva isn't a starter! and it's TFC. Berry, De Leon and Mattocks are the only ones who are "starters". Wenger = couple years away, Townsend = a forward on a Chivas team that have NOTHING for offense except Angel, Sam Garza = good player but hasn't started a game AFAIK, Jean-Baptiste = one of the main reason's Portlands defense was getting carved up the last 1/3 of the season (well... this is based on about 3 Portland games I saw... but he wasn't MLS ready get from what I did see), Berry = great player but Friedrich provided TONS of support for him (though Berry has to be considered a 'impact' player), Ethan Findlay I haven't heard much from since the draft so I'm assuming he hasn't done much this year.
ALL these players should be, at some point, good players in MLS (or elsewhere) but not often in their draft year, though as you point out, there are some good players that have established themselves already.
The Caps declined options on Sylvestre, Barbara and Ulisses.
Ulisses must have been thoroughly unimpressive; I only recall a couple games where he was even dressed. I don't actually remember him getting first team minutes.

Props if you actually saw him play. I think he dressed for 2 reserve games (one at Swangard, one at UBC). No first team minutes.
YES yes yes!!!! I think he has an absolute break out season in 2013.
I think you're right! He's come so far the last couple years I see another big leap forward for him. I think he could be a Beckerman type star if he decided to stay long term (big if).
Anyways, if anyone wants to watch GOOD exciting soccer in MLS. The Western Conference Finals between LA and SEA is the series to watch.
Great news that he's staying and nice to see that he's smart enough to get it out to the fans like that. Being out of the city I haven't heard a ton from him but its always good to see a sliver of character here and there.
It does seem too that the players that have come here have largely enjoyed the city, club, and supporters. It's not particularly surprising but a good note for the future anyways.

What? You don't like when players tweet about how they don't think they are getting paid what they're worth and will leave if they don't get a raise... but still LOOVVEEE the fans?

...and then are mind blowingly inconsistent and frustrating...
It may be a little cliche (or stating the obvious) but I do find that prima donna attitudes both on and off the pitch come from guys on the defensive side of the ball a hell of a lot less than they do the offensive. Not that Koffie is an all-out defensive player, but I definitely consider him to have that mentality first, getting forward second.
Mattocks robbed. Voted best player in the "24 players under 24" list earlier this year but somehow doesn't win rookie of the year. Joke.
ehhh not really. Austin Berry was a pretty clear favorite. Mattocks had a good year in spurts but lacked consistency. Austin Berry likely would have been number one on that list if he wasn't already 24 lol.
