There's some great pictures in there, but also a whole lot of mediocre ones. That Kerri Strug picture is really nothing special, unless there's something poignant about that moment I don't know about. Even then, looking at the picture you couldn't tell it was significant. There's also a bunch of baseball, basketball and football pictures that are good photos of famous players, but hardly great photos. Or perhaps they're just moments I don't know the significance of. The rainbow trout picture is an awesome picture, but shouldn't be on a sports list.
Perhaps calling the list 'Photos of great sporting moments and great athletes' would be more suitable.'
I've never seen the Wayne Gretzky picture that's at #9, and can't fathom what makes it better than the Jacques Plante photo that's been posted several times in this thread, or the two Richard pictures. In fact, I cover the local Junior B hockey team for my newspaper, and I've taken better pictures than that, but of course they're not of Gretzky.
A great hockey photo that hasn't been mentioned but that's worthy of inclusion is this one of Mario's famous goal against the Minnesota North Stars:
But my favorite sports picture ever - Alexander Karelin:
I don't get how you can call it "top 100 sports photos of all-time" and then more than half the list is from a sport that mots of the world doesn't know about/doesn't care about (baseball and American football).
I'm also surprised that Orr's picture is so low, that one together with Peters Forsbegs penalty shot in the OG -94 are the two pictures that comes to my mind when I think of hockey photos.
So many people commenting on problems with how the photos are ranked. The photos are not ranked. There is no reason to think so. The Photos are presented with absolutely minimal description, zero opinion, and no number. It's a collection of photos.

Then why are they SI's top 100 sports photos of all-time?

You question doesn't even make sense.
I mean, you have heard of the phrase 'in no particular order,' right? What else would they call it? "100 Sports Photos We Thought Were Really Neat But Not Necessarily Better Than Any Other Sports Photos You Might Also Like?" That
Don't forget Jackie Robinson sliding into home. Or Alan Amaeche scoring the winning TD in the "Greatest Game Ever Played." Everson Walls was in two great pics: one involving "The Catch" and a celebration of the Giants' Super Bowl victory.
I also adore that Mike Bossy 1984 "Drive For Five" Cover.
Well apparently a rainbow trout is a "better" picture than Bill Mazeroski hitting a walk-off in Game 7 of the World Series, Mark McGwire breaking the homerun record, the infamous Ben Johnson race, The Miracle on Ice, Muhammad Ali, and Willie Mays, so...
Mark McGwire didn't brake the home run record, steroids did.
I was gonna make a thread in the history of hockey section and post a bunch of historic NHL related photos (wouldn't make it on this forum because we'd get a bunch of childish gifs in the thread and photoshops). Someone should do that, I don't feel like it. Maybe make it a 100 greatest hockey photos thread and have aggregate voting like they do with players.
The fact that there are basketball pictures on the list discredit it entirely. Basketball doesn't even deserve to be labelled as a sport.
Because you don't like it? Calling what is clearly a sport "not a sport" because you don't like it is asinine. I don't like broccoli, but I'm pretty sure it's still a vegetable.
the pictures are not ranked. there is no number 1 or number 100. They are the top 100, but within that 100 there is no order here. Argue the pictures being included or pictures that should be included; but can we please stop arguing about the order the pictures were randomly placed in?
Also, the people trying to badmouth baseball and basketball are hilarious
and ya, the list is clearly biased to the sports SI focuses on.

They were numbered when the list was posted. I think they took it away.
