For one, I think they played over their heads last year, and secondly, I think him on the contract they would offer, would be a disaster. If he were to sign a deal that wouldn't cripple a team, I'd like to see him go to Washington. He might put them over the top, although, after getting burned by Werth's deal, they will probably steer clear.

He's a great defensive catcher, and it could also signal a willingness to move Saltalamacchia or Lavarnway.
Nah I doubt that. Ross will most likely start against left handers (Salty's kryptonite), and Lavarnway will get more time in Pawtucket to work on becoming a competent major league catcher.

I'm with you, I still think Napoli is a target. It's just a matter of whether or not he's willing to be primarily a first baseman, and maybe third catcher.
The red sox signed david ross for 2 years/$6 million.
According to Ken Rosenthal the deal is for 2 years at $ 6.2 million. Does anybody here remember that Ross was with the Red Sox for 8 games back in 2008 because I certainly didn't. Let's hope he does better this time around as he only hit .125 ( 1 for 8 ) in 2008.
I wouldn't mind seeing Boston sign Mike Napoli to play, primarily, first base. Maybe add Torii Hunter as well. I can see Salty being traded for a starter (definitely not top 3 material) - unless they see Aceves as a strong & potential 5th starter (I doubt it, seeing that there is a good chance he is dealt as well).

Everyone seems to think Salty is on his way out. Salty is nothing special but they must have a lot of faith in Lavarnway if they're willing to go into the season with him and Ross.

I could see him being part of a package for a bigger piece. Maybe they deal him alone, but they have a surplus of bullpen arms they need to trim down before the rule 5, so it seems like they would try to combine value to get a better player that will only take up one spot on the 40-man roster.
I think the Red Sox should absolutely get Mike Napoli. He's a diverse player that can play 1st Base/Catcher and has a great swing for Fenway (the guy's a Red Sox killer). I wouldn't mind a Ross/Lavarnway tandem for Catcher. Ross could mentor Lavarnway as some of you have said.
Now the outfield issue could be a problem. There is a good chance Ellsbury does not get traded this offseason, maybe before the trade deadline, but we still need two more outfielders. I say sign Torii Hunter to a 2 year deal and/or re-sign Cody Ross for a 2 year deal. I say this because I would trade Salty++(whatever the "+" will be) for Justin Masterson and Shin-Soo Choo. If we do that sort of trade, we get a starter for our starting rotation, but Choo's contract is also up at the end of the year like Ellsbury and we won't have two outfielders at the end of next season unless either wants to re-sign. Wost case scenario, Choo and Ellsbury leave next year and we get draft picks. I don't know it's just an idea.
