The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
There was a $10m cash call to pay the $20m signing bonuses this summer, and now the 11 investors have been advised of a mid-November cash call due to the lockout.
^ I don't think that necessarily means that they don't have the funds. Not really an indication that they're running out of $ though yes many owners do need the gate/concession receipts to cover some expenses they can't keep paying with just a lockout.
Unsurprising. The Sabre, Wild, Penguins, and Predators are some of the teams who had large signing bonuses paid this season. Without any gate revenues, they'll lose just as much as the players over a lockout.
Looks like the owners don't hold all the leverage after all.

What? Penguins didn't have any large signing bonuses paid this season.

Can't speak for the other teams but if you know anything about the Sabres owner Terry Pegula, you know he really doesn't care about the money. His net worth is like $3B.
That said I firmly believe he's one who is fighting to start the season anyway, because he's just a genuine fan of the sport who bought the team for the right reasons.

This is one little piece of a bigger puzzle. And in the big picture, the players lose much more than the owners. The leverage argument isn't even close.

I am more of an owners guy, but the Minny ownership group did this to themselves...I still can't believe they signed both Parise and Suter, and gave them a crazy amount of money, up front none the less...

The point may be that Leipold will lose a bit more than he may have bargained.
During Bettmans last lockout, he insisted that every team put aside a $10 mil lockout operations fund to tide them through up to a full years worth of lockout. Perhaps they didnt feel they needed such a fund this time?
Nice of the Wild though to maintain their workforce, offer generous interest rates to season ticketholders, and be able to afford the top ufa's and cash calls they surely foresaw. They are great market, in hockey country, that isnt in need of all these protections that small markets do i guess. They must have a very eager to compromise owner.

Well hey don't forget ... Parise said one of the things he looked at when deciding to sign was the financial stability of the club.

... or more likely he was cashing checks with his mouth in signing Parise & Suter that he knew his ass couldnt cash, figuring the league & or "someone else" would bail him out just as they always have throughout his miscreant career as an NHL owner.

Tomorrow Never Dies
Things would be so much easier if you didn't beat around the bush and you came out and told us how you really feel.
Or the owners knew they would have to cough up some dough to pay for the players they wanted to try and ice a winner. Doubt they were dumb enough to think the cba would be all peaches and roses as some here WANT to believe. Minnesota fans should rejoice the owners made that commitment to winning.

Yikes!
... Ive' got no time for that one. Minnesota deserves way better. Between the Gunds, Green & Leipold its like they were cursed by Mad Trapper Pierre "Pig Eye Parrant or Frankie Xavier "Moose" Goheen; mebbe "Mr.Zero" Frankie Brimsek for some long forgotten slight? I mean honestly, "how do you screw up hockey in the Land of 10,000 Lakes"?. Takes some doin huh? Anyhoo... Im tempted to spam Senator Al Franken's in-box demanding a judicial inquiry; sub-committe; charges laid. Get Jesse Ventura on the case. Damn straight its a Conspiracy Governor.
Yes, kudos to the Wild for keeping their staff on during the lockout. The arena workers who aren't working due to the lockout are the real losers in this whole mess of a lockout.

Exhibit A as to how hockey doesn't matter on ESPN:
Last night an ESPN program was discussing how the Detroit Pistons needed a hero citing the heroes on the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and no mention of the Detroit Red Wings. All this despite the Red Wings probably being the most succesful team in Detroit right now.

this 110%
Firmly with the owners myself, but they did this to themselves.

That's why I said before Craig Leipold shouldn't complain one week after signing both Parise and Suter that the players make to much money and need to start making less. No one forced him to let Chuck Fletcher sign them.

I agree with you, much less to one player who isn't even almost worth half of what he got.

This is a self inflicted injury in this case
