assuming there is no season where do the top ufa's go?
assuming there is no season where do the top ufa's go?
IF this season gets wiped out the 2013 NHL free agent class will be the deepest it's been since 2002 when belfour cjuo geruin holik amonte and ritcher headlined free agencey. Names like getzlaf perry zajac clarkson weiss iginla rebeiro backstrom howard simth thomas regehr and edler lupul all set to hit free agency.
with that in mind where do you think the top names end up?
for us I see us resigning lupul and going HARD after the likes of clarkson howard getzlaf perry obiviously not ending up with all 4 but I think those would be the 4 targets and I do think that if he hits free agency clarkson will end up in Toronto.
For my fav teams, I would love to see the Oilers pick up Edler from their divisional rivals to solidify their D. But they must sign Smid first. If they sign Edler and lose Smid, the defense only improves slightly. If they retain Smid and add Edler, they improve significantly.
For the Blue Jackets, would like to see them let go of Mason(not qualifying him and making him a UFA). I would want Howard but it won't happen as I see him staying in Detroit. A more realistic option I think would be if they went after Backstrom or Thomas on a short term deal. Both are getting up in age so a 2 year deal for Backstrom or a 1 year deal for Thomas would be my preference. Either can help out Bobrovsky and Columbus wouldn't need to rush Bobrovsky as a starter. I also would like to see the Jackets go after Lupul or Zajac. I can't see teh Devils letting Zajac leave though after losing Parise.
*Thomas might not get many offers and if he wants to keep his olympic drive alive, he might settle for Columbus.
Realistically, I actually see the Oilers going after UFA's. Not so much with the Jackets though.

If Edler doesn't re-up with Van, I think Buffalo could make a push to get him to play with Ehrhoff.
I also suspect we'll re-sign Regehr for another year or 2, since he's a much better fit in the "steady vet" role than Leopold, and let Leo walk.

For the leafs I'd like to see Lupul resigned and besides going after the obvious (Perry, Getzlaf, etc.) I'd like to try for Zajac, Weiss, Clowe in that order.
getzlaf perry zajac clarkson weiss iginla rebeiro backstrom howard simth thomas regehr and edler lupul all set to hit free agency.
I see us signing Lupul, if there is no season, to a 2 year/10M contract. And Bozak for 2/4M. I see us going hard after the top 2 from Anaheim, but coming out with none. I would like to sign Zajac for maybe 6 years/36M, and Clarkson for 3/12M. Go hard after all of the goalies, coming out with 1 with 5M cap hit, and signing Regher for 2 years/8M. We'll probably trade Liles and Grabovski also.
Only UFAs in Columbus are Prospal (who's committed to stay here, one year at a time as a player and then in the front office), Letestu (who I imagine we'd keep unless one of our other Cs looks NHL-ready), and Aucoin (dunno; he was going to mentor the kids but the kids look all right so far).
If we pursue anybody at all, it'd be a forward or two. Throwing away Mason is a popular sentiment but I don't think it likely, unless he insists on more than one year.

Weiss and Clowe are perfect UFA targets I would think for our team.
Thats a pretty ****ing solid top 12. Some good youth on that team in the 3rd line that could be one hell of a 3rd scoring line. Lots of grit and defensive play in the 4th line. Steckle for uber important faceoffs and depth.

Only COL UFAs off the top of my head are Hejduk and Kobasew. Kobasew's definitely gone, and if Hejduk misses a full season I don't see him coming back either.
Of the UFAs available then... a winger or a D is what we'd be going for. Clowe seems like he'd be a good fit, an outside shot on Perry too though I imagine he'd get more elsewhere. On D, Streit would be a great fit. Though I don't expect him to leave NYI (and I don't expect Perry to leave ANA either, Clowe may leave but isn't likely either).
Ed - I forgot Edler. Yeah go for him.

For Detroit Edler is the obvious target. We have so much cap space, I wouldn't mind Holland overpaying for him at all. If not Edler, Scuderi would be a nice addition as well. For offense I would like Clowe, but if young guys like Brunner and Nyquist do well our top six won't need him.
As for our own free agents, I don't see Filppula or Howard leaving. Cleary might just be forced out because of all of our forwards and his injury history. I'd like to see Brunner resign as well. With Eaves still not being healthy, I wouldn't mind having Miller resign.

don't expect a ton of success with Stephen Weiss as your 1C. He's a great 2C, but probably not a top-30 centre in the league.
Weiss is a solid #2 centerman, I would rather run two #2's for now and then when I get a #1 have extremely solid center depth.
The 3rd line has a chance to develop great chemistry, but also depth throughout the top6 while getting nhl experience. All 3 of them are able to cover adequately in a 2nd line capacity if someone goes down. Let them get NHL minutes and a chance to score. Its the only way to really see if they are any good. There is a lot of talent on that line, if they click it could explode.

Edler to Detroit is almost impossible as well if the cap drops.
FAs are Filppula/Brunner/Nyquist/Cleary/Miller/Mursak.
So you can almost guarantee Cleary is gone. Mursak probably gone. Miller will depend a lot on if Eaves ever comes back. Filppula and Nyquist are essentially locks to come back, and Brunner might be back as well.
That's 12-14 spots (depending on Brunner being signed as well as Eaves' health) and that doesn't even include the fact that Tatar really should be called up by then.
I expect this season for the Leafs to be going after some of the top UFA's considering they will have lots of cap space after Connolly, MacA, Lombardi, and a few other contracts end.
suprised you didnt mention regehr seems to perfect replacement for stuart
I wouldn't mind him either. It really depends on how the team does this year. There's obviously a ton of question marks with Lidstrom and Stuart leaving. If Kronwall can play in that #1 spot well and if Ericsson keeps improving and Smith plays like he did last year it should be a solid defense. There's a lot of ifs but they're all very realistic ifs.
suprised you didnt mention regehr seems to perfect replacement for stuart
Regehr, Edler, Lydman, Hainsey, Timonen.. all possibilities.
Edler would be the best, but I think he's re-signed by Canucks. And if he's not, I don't see why he would choose us over them (or other teams pushing money towards him).
Regehr would be ok.
Lydman.. if the price is right.. He may not have much left on him. Same with Hainsey.
FAs are Filppula/Brunner/Nyquist/Cleary/Miller/Mursak.

I'd hate to lose Mursak, esp. for nothing. I think he has solid 3rd line potential. Some team will pick him up and then we can watch him score 20 goals when he gets a chance to do that.
I like Cleary but with current situation, I don't think we can keep him. Possibly the same with Eaves. Miller could test UFA. Can pk, scores close to 15 goals..
