There is a draft lottery so finishing dead last is no guarantee that a team will draft first overall. And there are 2-3 guys who were picked first overall in the draft who never played a game in the NHL. Based on those facts how does tanking make any sense?

People are obsessed with high picks. I bet some of these people would get upset if the Leafs win the Cup because they will be drafting 30th instead of in the lottery
With no season all 30 teams have a chance at drafting #1 overall.
With a season and based on the final standings only the bottom 5 teams have a chance at #1 overall.
30 teams verses 5 teams for #1 overall possibility. Leafs could draft 30th with no season, and they would need to win the Cup in a shortened season to draft 30th.
Based on the Leafs finishing in the bottom 5 in 2 of the past 3 seasons, one has to believe that another bottom 5 finish is highly possible. There is getter odds of finishing in the bottom 5 and competing with 4 other teams for Mackinnon than competing against 30 teams in a weighted lottery with no season.
Yeah but many will have much lower chances.
We don't know if the Leafs are a bottom 5 team at all.

I do agree the idea that picks are the be all and end all are silly. It's quite tiresome.
People on this board would rather see Kessel traded than re-signed for "Picks". It's so stupid.
IMO, MacKinnon might be good, but he's no phenomenon.
a first line, all-star type player. wouldn't call him a phenom either, depending on our definition of that word.
his teammate drouin might be even better. kid has absolutely sick hands and already carries himself like a pro at age 17. and seemingly getting better each and every game.
Play the season and we'd have just as good if not better odds.
Plus we'd gain extra picks from trading pending UFAs in Lupul, Connolly, Bozak, Lombardi, Steckel, CMac some of which or potentially all of which might not reink.

yep
(though I wouldn't guarantee mackinnon all-star level status yet)
The Leafs finished 29th in goals against with Reimer, Gustavsson and Scrivens last year.
Now we have Reimer and Scrivens only, minus the goalie that posted the most wins Gustavsson (17), which is the least experienced goaltending in the league now with less than 100 games combined. Scrivens is even struggling on the Marlies at present in the AHL.
Where would you rank Leafs goaltending among the rest of the league, at the most critical position to win consistently?.
If you place them in the bottom 5 of the league, then you can understand why people believe a bottom 5 finish is entirely possible.
If Wilson was still the coach, you may have a point.
Why don't we just agree that season or not, 1st overall is unlikely and be done with it.
Can't help to think that some people are purposely setting their expectation ridiculously high (like we have any chance of drafting MacKinnon), only so they can grumble endlessly when their pipedream falls through.

My dad's been going to most of the Mooseheads' home games this year and has loved Drouin, said he reminds him a little of Dougie Gilmour, arguably his favourite Leaf. I haven't gotten to see him play yet, but I saw MacKinnon once last year, though he didn't have a great game. Very exciting time for the Mooseheads right now, for sure.
12% chance at Jones
18% chance at Barkov

66% chance at Erne
72% chance at Lazar

a great year to be a mooseheads fan for sure. drouin reminds me of claude giroux.
they'll surely try to add a couple of 19 year old vets during the qmjhl trading period and go for a championship this year.

Because first overall almost guarentees you a star. Finishing last guarentees you a top 2 pick and in the "new nhl" having a star on an ELC is huge

so we can get some good players? duhhhh
to be serious, so we can actually have a franchise player (other than Rielly jk)

Yeah...he is about the only one. I think the poster means 2 or 3 first overalls who didnt live up to the hype. Really solid ground to believe drafting 1st overall is not worthwhile. Like going to University......not guaranteed anything right? So why do so many kids bother? Might as well just finish highschool and try and make it without the extra diploma. So many uni grads who are waiting on tables somewhere. Must be a waste of time.
