I just think Cowen's injury is such a huge hole to fill in the lineup - he is basically our #2 Dman, and to ask Boro and Weircoche to pick up that void is a bit much for a rookie on a team that will only have 60 games to make the playoffs.

I don't really see Bishop as a major part of our team, he doesn't have much value I don't think.

Not even slightly jarred by this news. This lockout has really got to me.

Sutton might never play again. He's got a a bad knee and recently mused that he might have played his last NHL game. Now this could be something he's saying to keep getting paid (He had offseason knee injury so he still gets paid, lockout or not), but I'm not sure. Regardless, Edmonton already has a large young goalie who may or may not pan out, so I'm not sure they'd be too interested in Bishop.

I'd beat someone up if that were to happen.

FFS. Terrible news. I really hope this wont be a long term recurring injury for Jared. Sucks to have our most important defencemen go through 2 surgeries at such a young age.

I would rather trade Bishop (either alone or in a package) for another first for the 2013 draft. This draft class is very deep.

Either that or trade him in a package for either a top six winger or a top 4 d man.

short-term, either the season restarts and we end up with a top-10 pick, or there is no season and cowen's injury is inconsequential.

Yeah, this sucks for cowen, but for the team as a whole, no need to freak out.
Then we can draft Nathan Mackinnon

This is probably to fix something up so it doesn't become a long term problem. No better time to do this kind of stuff.

Huge hole for a bad defence if there is a season. Really wanted to see Cowen dominate the AHL this year.

I can definitely see him as the 7th defenceman though, subbing in here and there for some games. I already thought Benoit would see a handful of games this season in Ottawa anyways, but I think with Cowen done, that's almost a guarantee... pending, of course, on whatever the waiver rules will be in the new CBA. Who knows what wacky stuff they'll throw in there.
I think it's the opposite. We have a lot of stay at home D with Phillips, Methot, and Lundin, but we only have Karlsson and Gonchar who can provide offense. We've lost the offense of Kuba(3rd) and gilroy(4th) with no one to replace it. If anything, we need a more skilled offensive guy to balance out the lines(3 offensive capable guys, with 3 shut down guys). Although if benoit doesn't do that well after a few games, i would bring up wiercioch personally.

keep in mind this is our D corps numbers from last year without cowen.

Karlsson.81..19..59..78
Gonchar..74...5...32..37
Phillips...80...5...14..19
Methot...46...1....6...7
Lundin....17...0....2...2

I'd rather add a guy who can maybe get 20 points over a 10-15 point defensive guy.

Ceci could handle the AHL with relative ease. He's not far from the NHL at all. He could play IMO but it would hurt his development.

Isles fan offering my condolences. We've been through this with DP and now Calvin de Haan who was looking like a stud before he went down with yet another shoulder injury. It really does suck because we're not sure if Calvin will ever be healthy enough to sustain a NHL career anymore. Hopefully that is not the case with Cowen because I know you guys were banking on him to be an absolute rock for you guys. At least we have Reinhart and other and other B-level prospects that can hopefully step up, where as you guys have made it seem like the system is bare after Ceci.

Nah, it's just that Cowen is supposed to be the perfect complementary defender to Karlsson forming arguably the best pairing. That is our hope so any injury makes us hold our breathe.

We still have Ceci, Wiercioch, Borowiecki, Wikstrand, Claesson Not great but not bad either.

It's just the significance of Cowen won't be the same as any of those guys whatsoever.

**** news, but a recovery to full health is the key. As a budding young defenceman, he has time to catch up to fulfill his potential.

Not worried about long-term consequences too much, more or less it effects the shortened season if there is a CBA.

Borocop is the obvious call-up to replace the physicality, but not the minutes. Marc Methot and Mike Lundin's acquisitions become that important. They will need to step up and fill-up the gaps created by Cowen and Kuba.

This obviously sucks, but if it had to occur, it happened at the right time. He's not missing any NHL games right now and I'm not too optimistic about the lockout ending anytime soon, so we don't have to worry about finding a replacement for him (at least for the time being). If he shows the same commitment to his rehab process the same way he did for his knee injury, which I'm sure he will, I think he'll have a successful recovery and can be counted on to play a top 4 role next season (if there is one).

hahaha! The part about Elliott killed me!

As for Cowen, yeah it sucks but I think he'll be fine. I don't know anything about hip injuries but if he successfully recovered from that knee injury without a major impact on his career, I'm sure he can do it this time too. He's not human guys, he's a man cow, a minotaur.. those beasts have a much different way to handle it.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Jared Cowen's agent @RickJValette has update on the OTT defenceman's injury/surgery. As follows

Jared has a small tear in his labrum (hip). He will have surgery Saturday morning in New York. I expect he will be out for the season."
