Stewie and I baked cookies last night and took some to a couple of the veterans in the neighborhood. Guy down the street is an 87-88yo WWII vet, still independently living with his wife of 60+ years, although both have slowed considerably with age - I helped him up after he fell in his driveway mid-summer and bloodied himself. Guy on the corner is ~83yo Korean vet & purple heart recipient. Neighbor was wounded during a particularly hellish all-night shelling while coming to the aid of his wounded CO, a 25yo West Point grad LT, who eventually died in his arms. (Coincidentally, two of my neighbor's grandsons are service academy graduates.) Via the internet and veteran's reunion groups, my neighbor was contacted by the deceased LT's grandson a few years ago, interested in learning more about his KIA grandfather. My neighbor invited them to town and hosted them for a week, gratis.

Belated thanks to all veterans, of all ages, who either served or are serving, home or abroad, during conflict or peace.

Good for you, BG. Good example to set for Stewie too.

IMO, much better way to spend Veterans Day than talking down to women just because you have money. *grumble*

Depending on how old you are, I can finally say, when I was your age I was the same.

I'm 17. 18 Saturday. Never saw the allure in throwing up your breakfast wasted or smelling like skunk
And Mike McD I'm about to be 18

Maybe you're a late bloomer, like me. I didn't start throwing up my breakfast until I was about 22.

Why do I have to be different to them?
Just to earn the respect of a dance hall friend,
We have the same old row, again and again.
Why do I have to move with a crowd
Of kids that hardly notice I'm around,
I have to work myself to death just to fit in.

I'm coming down
Got home on the very first train from town.
My dad just left for work
He wasn't talking.
It's all a game,
'Cos inside I'm just the same,
My fried egg makes me sick
First thing in the morning.

I didn't either. I was too into doing stuff to want to be impaired at any time. I'm 26 and I've been drunk maybe 5 times.

You're missing out. :p

I'm not an advocate of getting corked on a regular basis, but unloading once in a while in the right circumstance isn't that big a deal.

Exhibit A : Go to the Research Society on Alcoholism annual conference in Orlando. At night, 80% of the drunk people in bars around the site are PhDs who specialize in alcohol research.

If THEY don't think it's a big deal, I sure don't.

I'm a CPA. They give you alcoholism pamphlets in the mail when you get certified. They know.

In all seriousness, I've never been a huge drinker, but yes, it's fun once in a while. And now, I'm totally buzzed off one drink, so that's fun and significantly cheaper.

For me it had more to do with not seeing the point. I never found the fun in intentionally making yourself become an idiot (which is pretty much what being drunk is). Being around them while sober is even worse.

At first I reacted to this negatively, but there are definitely some people that just don't deal well with alcohol. Maybe you're one of those people? My friends and I drink every other weekend or so and it's always a great time.

I had a roommate who got multiple DWI's, arrested a few times, pissed on a bunch of couches, and even got so wasted he passed out in our kitchen while standing up and smashed a whole in the wall with this forehead.

Similar logic used to rationalize taking your summer vacation concurrent with the NAMBLA** convention?

It's not intentionally "making yourself an idiot".

I used to say that crap all the time before I started drinking socially with friends.

Ha - I just wrote a long response about how drunk and idiot or not synonymous, but you know what? To each their own.

I'm a sober idiot. Being a drunk idiot just turns my volume up to 11.
