I'd assume Ritchie was out because of the questionable hit at the end of the 1st game

The rosters were predetermined weeks in advance. He was never scheduled to play the second game. Mixing in guys to get a look at multiple players.

I wanted to see it too, forgot about it, now I'm glad I did considering 2-1 and no Ritchie. If work gets in the way during the WHL games, and you're around a computer, you might find a stream on the Prospects board.

Is Ritchie the next Benn? And by that I mean is he the guy who could be the next can't miss prospect (which I considered Benn to be at this same stage)?

I think you'd have to tap the brakes on that. Ritchie has Ryan Strome on his line, and this is very conceivably just a very long hot streak. That being said even if he averages a point a game for the rest of the season and had a solid playoffs it would be very difficult not to be excited about him.

Btw I don't mean can't miss PPG NHL player, just that he seems like a candidate to make some noise and be a complimentary scorer. I'm not going to count his numbers against him just yet. I realize he's playing in a good situation but the point to me is that he demonstrated last year a willingness and acumen to play a checking role and now he's scoring a ton. Guys who can play up to the level of those around them is important, and so far he seems to be doing that.

That's probably a little different then. You said Benn so I just thought someone near that caliber of player, a reasonably good 1st liner.

Sorry, I really just meant sure fire NHL player but with a pretty significant upside. To my memory Benn was the last guy who I remember seeing at camp while he was still in junior that looked like a lock for the NHL, though I also thought he had a good chance at reaching a rather high ceiling. I've seen less of Ritchie to give me much gut feeling one way or the other.

I almost feel that Ritchie is overshadowed by Strome because he was a #5 pick and Ritchie was a post-30. But when you look at the score sheets, not all of Ritchie's production comes from Strome, and Strome does feed off of Ritchie as well. I understand the line mates argument and it is a very valid point, but it seems to create an overshadowing effect when the player does anything mildly productive, much less this explosion Ritchie is having. You can tell he's grown a lot since his drafting. This is just a different way of looking at it, and in a more positive way from his perspective, and not the players around him.

I definitely don't have the eye test, it's always so iffy at the junior level. Is it a Richards-Lecavalier situation or an Ott-Spezza situation? I tend to think you don't know the answer until after juniors. Still Ritchie produced before Strome, they haven't played their entire junior career together so it's important to take that into account.

Well I think it's obvious that Ritchie has a lot more offensive talent than Ott did/does based off all reports of his style of play. I'd compare it to the Richards/Eriksson situation in Dallas. Some people weren't sure if Eriksson could keep up that production without Richards, but obviously he did. We will only truly know what kind of expectations to put on him until he's not on a stacked line and see what kind of numbers he's putting up.

Biggest thing for Ritchie will be to make the World Juniors team and get the experience there. If he shows some big time plays, hits, motivation, at that tournament it will be great.

Mackenzie on Yakupov's Return to Sarnia Nice little plug for Ritchie. If he get's this type of review now, and can hold up his play for the next month or so, I would be surprised if he was left of the Canada WJC roster. At any rate, he picked a good time to get hot.

This is really only the first year where Ritchie had good, consistent play. I wouldn't put him on Benn's level yet, let's calm down.

That is a huge knock on him. It's not just consistent scoring either. People were always down on him in Sarnia for taking long stretches of games off where he wasn't scoring or playing well in particular.

Honestly, ever sense he's come to Narnia he's pretty pretty consistent. Even though he wasn't scoring a ton of goals early this year or even in the playoffs last year, he played a defensively sound overall game. He finally found it within himself to compete every game at the OHL level regardless of scoring.

I agree this very nice offensive run is neat, but it's way too early to say this is the type of player he can be in the NHL.

Like I said, I don't get to watch him play in the OHL but then again I wasn't able to see Benn play in the WHL either. The one time I saw Ritchie at development camp he stood out for me in the same way that Benn did - that shot/release.

Btw, who did he play with in Niagara last year?
