Question about contracts due to lockout

With the lockout does that mean that a player loses a year off their contract if there is no hockey this year? Lets say John Doe has 3 years left on his contract and this season there is no hockey does that mean next year if there is a season he has only 2 years left?

Correct. Every player loses a year on their contract.

Actually no. It would depend on the CBA transitional terms. In the 2004-05 Lockout, that was one thing that was included in the CBA. There's no guarantee to happen again.

Unless there is explicit language to the contrary in the CBA, all SPCs will age and burn a year.

The transition rules of Exhibit 16 were silent on the issue (except for ELS SPCs), so all non-ELS SPCs burned a year.

The "slide" provisions for ELS SPCs were modified - all SPCs which slid in '03-'04 and any new SPCs which commenced in '04-'05 were deemed to have slid in '04-'05.

If a full season is lost to a lockout, a player loses that entire year on his contract even though no hockey is ever played. That means that a lost year does not somehow carry over to the following year. The year is gone; the money is gone.

The reason goes back to how a player contract is structured (or as it's called, a Standard Player's Contract or its short form, SPC). When a player signs a contract, he agrees that each contract year is counted as a "League Year". Under the CBA, a "League Year" is defined as July 1 of one year to June 30 of the next year.

And to reiterate kdb... how contracts are handled is negotiated as part of the CBA transition (should there be a full complete season lost).

Would depend on the new CBA's transition rules. Under the past CBA transition rules all rookie contracts like Yakupov's that would have commenced in the canceled 2004-2005 season slid.

For purposes of determining "slides" for the 2004-05 cancelled season, the
following rules shall apply: (1) All Entry Level SPCs that "slid" in 2003-04, will
be deemed to have "slid" for 2004-05; (2) All Entry Level SPCs that did not
"slide" in 2003-04, will be deemed not to have "slid" in 2004-05; and (3) All
Entry Level SPCs entered into prior to the expiration of the Expired CBA, with a
term scheduled to commence with the 2004-05 season, will be deemed to have
"slid" for 2004-05.

If they agree to transitional rules similar to the ones used after the 2004-05 lockout, then teams will have some time to negotiate with their own players before they become UFAs.
