Do we need a game breaker?

I just watched Bure's induction ceremony and during it Pat Quinn said something that struck me, something along the lines of 'we knew that even if we were down and out, we had a game breaker that could win it for us'

I know we have elite level talents up front with the Sedins and Kesler but I don't see them as game breakers - though during that Nashville series in 2010 Kesler turned it on.

Is that something we need, someone who one-on-one can win the game for us?

Or is out team built different than that?

(mods if this is more appropriate in the Armchair thread, feel free to move it, I wasn't sure if it garnered a new thread or not)

Sedins, Kesler, Luongo/Schneider are all game-breakers. To an extent so are Burrows and Bieksa.

We could always use more of them, though.

This. People don't appreciate what we have. The Sedins, especially.

I'd take a healthy Kesler over that game breaker (he has shown you can dominate in a series like the Preds one a couple years ago)....course the question is, can we ever have a healthy Kesler given the way he plays? (all out - all the time - regular season & playoffs). In many ways, Burrows is like this also (rarely if every 'takes a night off' - he might not always have a great game but you can't knock Kesler's or Burrows work ethic).

Kesler is one of the most frustrating players in the league to watch. One night he's all-world in both ends, the next he's slapping his stick on the ice all night and trying to deke through five players at once.

We do need more one-shot scorers. It's a problem that has plagued them for a few years now.

This is like saying we need a franchise defenseman. Great in theory, but it's impossible to acquire one if you dont develop that player.

This is what I believe a game breaker is. All the player needs is one chance to change the game. Don't forget Quinn also said they could be down and out and as long as the goalie was keeping them in it, all a game-breaker needs is one chance. Something as much as I like Luo, he can't do that anymore.

Him and Schneider both did it the entire season last year.

True. I should amend that to the playoffs against real quality teams.

Calling Kesler and Burrows game breakers is laughable.

Kesler when he's hot, maybe. Burrows?

Come on, Kesler put the team on his back for the entire Nashville series, and Burr scored almost 50% of the important goals in the other 3 series. If that's not considered "Game-Breaking" I don't know what is.

I would add all the Kesler goals against Nashville in that series, but it'd take too long.

There was a lot more to Boston getting Chara than just "signing" him.

It was complete luck that Ottawa had no cap space for him and chose Wade Redden over Zdeno, Boston was just in the right place at the right time.

I also dont believe Chara was a franchise #1 defenseman at the time either. His career high in points up to that point was 43.

Isn't asking if we need a game breaker like asking if the canucks need to win games? What is a game breaker? In opinion if you are talking about a dynamic goal scorer like Bure who had speed, skill and a knack for scoring goals, then yes. IMO what we need is a superstar RW who could play with Kesler, from time to time on the first line and be the go to scorer on the PP.

Of course we could use another game breaker but really we just need depth (good depth) that can take pressure off our top players.

The answer to all our problems is Corey Perry

or perhaps Alex Semin

(both upcoming UFAs)

Kesler can be a game breaking forward when he's on a hot streak. Those are extremely far in between.

Burrows is an opportunistic scorer and is a product of other offensive players. It's laughable to say the phrases "Burrows can take over a game", "Burrows creates chance, after chance, after chance by himself".

His back gave out after largely shutting does Toews in the Hawks series and carrying the team past the Preds. Last year, he clearly wasn't 100% in the post-season - and his performance reflected that. He's not that offensively gifted to center a "helicopter line" ala Pat LaFontaine (eg., no wings). Give him a legitimate playmaking winger & watch what happens.

Hemsky and Kesler would be dynamite together - for the ten games they'd be in the lineup together

If we didn't have game breakers, we wouldn't be a Stanley Cup contending team.
