As a Blue Jays fan, this is the best news in a couple of off seasons for us.

Finally, the Blue Jays brass spend some money/trades and this was a big one. Rejoice Jays fans!

My mistake on Livan, I didn't realize he spent that much time in the system. I thought he made a few appearances and then went straight to the majors.

Wow. Insane trade. Marlins are losing it, awful ownership. As for the Jays, great trade for them.. could easily see them winning 90+ games. The AL East is so stacked.

Anyone who tries to defend this trade like Olney is as far as value goes is insane

Remember how blue chip prospects like Maybin/Miller worked out for Marlins in Cabrera trade?

Proven MLB talent >>> Prospects

Let's try looking at this objectively.
The Jays were going into 2013 with Ricky Romero as their #2, right behind Morrow, who is great. After today, they have Johnson, Morrow, Buehrle, and Romero.

The Orioles were very very very lucky last year. They finished in the middle for both Runs and Runs against. Fortunate. The Jays were the total opposite with all of the injuries.

Listening to Olney, he brought up Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers in why the trade might be blocked; confirms that I probably shouldn't be worried about it.

I think Orioles takebit of a step back next season and Jays can defnitely challenge for that 2nd wild card spot. Yanks/Rays are still the teams to beat in AL East IMO.

I'm not sure that the Jays are getting as good a deal as some fans think -- mainly because I've always thought that Reyes is one of the most overrated players in baseball. Still, he has his stretches, and Johnson (when healthy) is a beast. When you get a chance to make a move like this, you take it every time (as long as you're willing to pay.)

Which brings me to my next point: Blue Jays fans aren't allowed to whine about a salary cap anymore.

Before the Jays got decimated by injuries, they were already competing for the wild card. Now they have dramatically improved there roster.

I agree Reyes is overrated at times, his WAR is a slight improvement over Escobar. I am glad to get a guy who can lead-off and steal on the Jays though, we have a young lineup and I like that kind of energy.

I mean there's essentially no way they could have got a better deal on the market.

As a Mets fan, Reyes is not overrated. Glad I can root for him to do well again.

Tend to agree with this. This isn’t nearly as lopsided as some people are saying.

Reyes has a lot more name value, but his glove has been going into the toilet the past few years while Escobar is one of the best-fielding SSs in baseball. Assuming he rebounds to his usual offensive performance next season, his WAR will be in exactly the same range as Reyes’ – as it’s been for the past two seasons as well.

Similarly, Alvarez will probably be a pretty average starting pitcher (as he’s been for the last 1.5 seasons save for one nightmare month last year) and so will Buehrle. You’d take Buehrle and his consistency over a single season, but there’s probably not going to be a huge difference there.

Take those out, and it’s a hell of a lot of youth – essentially 4 top prospects - for one season of an injury-prone Josh Johnson.

Having said that, yeah, it’s a trade you probably have to make. Becoming a ‘buyer’ like this will be a huge shot in the arm and have a major psychological impact both on the existing roster and on the fanbase. And their starting pitching – which was a nightmare last year – should be loads better.

Reyes-Izturis is a pretty crap defensive middle infield, though … especially compared to the Escobar-Hetcheverria combo that would probably have been in place otherwise.

We did give up alot in this trade, but our farm system is one of the best in baseball so we could afford to.
We did lose some D up the middle but Escobar was pretty much gone no matter what. Making us the second team that will have gotten rid of him for reasons other than his play on the field.

An overrated SS and a pitcher who might be healthy all year are the center pieces? Along with burhle? Who the white sox let go?

The marlins typically fire sell after a championship but they did it early. Save a ton of money on those deals and move on.

JJ is pretty elite but Yankees/ Rays are much tough to face than Nationals, Mets and Braves.

What does overrated mean? He's not a superstar? He's better than Yunel Escobar, and does he shore up the lead-off position, of which the Jays seemingly never have.

Buehrle is still a decent pitcher, so I'm not sure what the White Sox have to do with it.

And Johnson, sure he's had issues, but he's been over 180 ip in 3 of the last 4 years, not too worried.

The Jays rotation goes from mediocre at best, to legit.

White Sox didn't just let Buehrle go

They tried to retain him but the $$$ and years he got from Marlins were too rich for White Sox

Look at how Marlins backloaded his deal ,, Sox refused to match because of it
