A bit, but not a ton. We have/had one of the best farm systems in the baseball so losing the prospects shouldn't hurt too much. And we have maybe the best power hitters in the game but he isn't getting any younger so it was a good time to put some guys around him.

As a Bruins fan and Jays fan I think I'm ok to answer this for you guys. AA our gm is under no pressure to win now at all. They made a promise to the fans they would spend more money so that's really the only pressure he had on him. To spend enough to keep the fans happy and with this trade we very much are happy.

As for the trade itself. The Marlins did get a very nice haul of good prospects. None are sure things but they all have pretty strong upside. If they all pan out this could end up a win for the Marlins. Especially if we aren't able to extend JJ. Anyway, just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

We gave up good young players and prospects in this deal. But we could afford to as well.

I was just going to post this. And I agree. They're trying to make it seem like they tried to get them to appease the fans.

Instead they're trying for Jason Bay. I just...I can't.

Not that the Blue Jays didn't blow away the Marlins but I can't see any reason why we would want Reyes or Johnson while we are trying to rebuild after dumping $200m in Salary

I like both of those guys and I would usually take proven talent over prospects but I'd rather have Middlebrooks, Bogaerts, Barnes, Bradley, etc. The Red Sox aren't a contender right now and they have some prospects who have the potential to be very good. Bogaerts and JBJ aren't that far way either, both guys will be probably be in the majors within the next two years.

I want them to keep the top prospects and have more homegrown players unless they can get a young player with a lot of potential (eg. Upton). I like following these prospects as they develop in the minors and eventually make their way to the majors. Just like Lester, Buchholz, Pedroia, Ellsbury, etc.

In fairness, the marlins finished worse than the red sox last season in a weaker league. 4 of the 5 going to toronto were core members of that team. It's good news in that it helps put things into perspective for cherington. Don't jump the gun to compete in '13. Bridge year, have two solid drafts with top 10 picks, and welcome the prospects to the bigs in '14-15.

More or less agreed. BC needs to keep his eye on the big picture, here.

Quit trying to compete with the elite teams this year. Just try to get better without sacrificing the future.

In last week's Baseball America Rankings Marisnick was ranked as the # 2 Blue Jays prospect, Nicolino was ranked as the # 5 prospect and Hechavarria was ranked # 8.

I'm glad for Toronto- great, great city overall but lets face it sports wise they are the Buffalo of Canada. I'm not sure the Leafs have even made the Finals let alone win them since preexpansion, and the Blue Jays have been meh for nearly 20 years.
The Basketball team makes the Blue Jays seem interesting- good for them.

Maybe there luck has changed and the lockout will stick and they'll get Jones or McKinnon and get back to the top of the hockey world.

Marlins wanted Doubront, Middlebrooks, and Bogaerts as for Reyes, Johnson etc.

Good luck to the Jays cause that's ridiculous

Just for the sake of discussion, if the Red Sox hadn't made the Gonzalez, Beckett, Crawford deal, and they gave up Doubront, Middlebrooks, and Bogaerts, this is what the team would look like.

Reyes SS
Pedroia 2B
Ellsbury CF
Gonzalez 1B
Ortiz DH
Saltalamacchia C
Crawford LF
Bonifacio 3B
RF

Bench:
Buck, Ross, Ciriaco, Kalish

Rotation:
Lester, Buchholz, Johnson, Beckett, Buehrle, Lackey

Bullpen:
Bailey, Tazawa, Bard, Melancon, Miller, Breslow

Salary:
$200+ million

I'd rather be where they are today.

^ you and me both.

The Sox did good to stand pat. But now we gotta see what they do next because we are the worst team in the AL East on paper, of course.

100% fair weather baseball fan, haven't sifted through the ton of pages or read much online about this deal. In your opinions, does a move(s) like this put the Jays in the conversation of playoffs next season??
