I don't know about anyone else, but every time I see a story about a hockey player driving drunk I think of Steve Chiasson. I think all of the griping about "internet warriors" or people being "hypocritical" is misplaced. What Sheahan did was stupid, and I agree with your first post that he hopefully learns something from it.
No one expects these guys to be angels, but I think we hope everyone learns to make better choices.

I'm not sure if you read correctly or not but I didn't compare this drinking and driving to porn, that was Captain Bob, I simply agreed that there's a lot of hypocrites out there about drinking and driving. 90% of adult males will do it in their lifetime, we must have a board of ****ing saints

So true. Almost every guy I know has one of those "holy poop, I can't remember the drive, but I ended up at home after the bar" stories in their pocket. Chicks are different, one of them always wants to DD so they can be the judgmental one that ****-blocks her friends at the bar. Anyone here that will admit to driving after drinking surely has said to themselves "well, got away with one there" at some point in their lives, probably more than once. With maturity, we all learn.

I don't disagree. It's a fallacy, though, to say that because someone has down something they can't say it's wrong or bad. I smoke, but I can still tell people it's bad for them. If I've driven drunk, I can still tell someone who did it that they are idiots for doing it. Riley did a stupid thing. Drunk driving is bad enough, then throw in he did it before he's even allowed to drink here makes it really really stupid. He will learn, but this won't be easy for him to bounce back from. He's not going to get a pardon from the two a day breathalyzer tests because he is an athlete.

Alright so we don't live in a dream world, glad we cleared that up. You can still say he did a stupid stupid thing without being a hypocrite or "pathetic". I wonder what's more pathetic, to drink and drive or condemn it.. I don't want drunk driving to be seen as the norm and learning curve of human behavior, even if it is for a certain few, thank you very much. I'd like to think I'm not alone in thinking so either.
I am very confused how so many people wind up driving the wrong way drunk. I get that driving drunk is wrong to begin with, but this aspect of the news where once a week on the local news it seems in Milwaukee someone goes the wrong way on the freeway, it seems to happen everywhere I have ever lived. I don't understand how that happens ever.
It sure does seem like there are a lot of people driving the wrong way. I gotta think it has something to do with it being FAR easier for cops to spot a drunk driver driving the wrong way instead of a drunk driver driving the correct way. Obviously drunk drivers do drive the wrong way more than sober drivers, however, I think the stats might be biased a little.
However, I do know a few people that have DUIs(as do most people I am sure), and one of them was driving the wrong way.
It's hardly a secret that alcohol abuse and other substance issues are rampant in pro hockey. Too many coaches, GMs etc. are up to it themselves and there's kind of an old-time "ah what's a few drinks" type attitude going on. Hence why unfortunately I don't think this will have any effect on Sheahan's career nor do I think he will change his ways. I doubt this was the first time he drove drunk and I doubt it was the last.

People obviously should work to minimize stupid behavior that jeopardizes their lives and the lives of others.

I don't think this kid is even worth the trouble...wasn't impressed by him at Notre Dame, still haven't been impressed by his game to this point. Doubt he ever makes an impact in this league. Not talented enough to put up with this kind of nonsense.

Hah. You know, in my work, I deal with cops and judges and lawyers who handle a lot of cases of 20-year-olds who make bad choices.
Most of these people have the ability to show empathy for youngsters who make bad choices -- even as they make the arrests, file for the warrants, press the charges and make verdicts.
And even when they sit in LITERAL judgement of these people, they have a lot more class and humanity than I see in threads like these.

It is always pretty stupid... I can already see people jumping on you for that comment. I understand the point, really the lucky thing for him is he has the salary to pay for this mistake. That is what helps you avoid the harsher penalties in the court system he is about to go through. If he couldn't pay the couple grand this is going to cost he would be looking at the full 180. With insurance and every thing else this is going to be a very expensive mistake although certainly avoiding the more tragic elements is the most important thing.
I know people who have these and a lot of people around these boards have probably got behind the wheel after a couple too many ginger rails as Mickey would say. I agree with CB, that there is always a jump to go after people who have done this with a huge backlash. I hope he learned from it, but lets not pretend he got caught doing something that isn't pretty prevalent in society.
He is 20 years old he is going to make mistakes. If he repeats this one we have a problem and he will too, because no amount of begging (first time) or money will save him from a decent stay in jail in that instance.
For those of you saying you don't see his talent, he is playing better than Jurco. I know he is one year older. But when I watch the Griffins I am certain he will at least crack the bottom six of the Detroit lineup. He is responsible (I know tough word with this news but still it is just the on-ice we are talking about) in his own end, has a heavy shot and a big body. He needs to get more physical, but he already has a lot of trust with the coaches. He has even been playing point on the PP lately. I have seen him draw the other teams tougher lines from time to time. He is making a lot of progress and has an NHL shot, NHL wheels on top of sound positioning.
By the way a good moment here for Brendan Smith who says he wants to be a leader. He has had his problems in the past maybe he can talk to Riley and help him out. I also seriously doubt knowing quite a few AHL players that he was alone. Hockey guys usually go out with at least a couple teammates, I know that is speculation but it would be surprising to me if he was all alone.
Well I've never made the intentional decision that I know will put people's lives in danger. Twice.
And I've lived longer than this kid.
Um... The driving aspect is once and hopefully that is the last time he does it.
Underage drinking don't get me started on that. He is of legal age at home and for the life of me I will never understand why I can die for my country at 18, but can't have a beer at that same age.
