People are kidding themselves if they think a medicore and declining 3rd line center that is making 5.5 million a year cap hit isn't causing problems with recruitment and icetime assignments on the roster for both management and coaches.

Whitney fills a big need for DET
Gagner to fill the #2C spot
Omark and Klefa to add to their depth
Yakupov gets mentor, EDM soldifies the C spot. Hemsky and Paajarvi become trade bait for a top 2 Dman (Yandle??)
P.Datsyuk is 34yrs and has a cap hit of 6.7M until 2012-13, so your going to trade all that for a 1yr of P.Datsyuk. This has to rank up there with one of the worst.
Detroit fans are going to freak out if they see this.
Rightfully so, Datsyuk is a top 5 center.
Klefbom is the only one that could be an impact player, and that wouldn't be anytime soon.....

IMO if DET wants to retool then this could be a good option.
Klefbom is almost NHL ready and a healthy Whitney is as good as anyone they have on D. Shores up the D for them and gets them Gagner and Omark

+1 especially for a player that will maybe play 3-4 more years tops
I'd move Gagner and something else of decent value for him (and Detroit would tell me to piss off) but not Klefbom. 3-4 years of Datsyuk to mentor RNH would be amazing and even at the end of those years he'd probably still be better than Gagner.
I think a trade that could benefit both team would be something along the lines of
Omark and a 2nd for Matt Martin from Long Island.
Omark could give Tavares and Grabner some support by dishing the puck. The second could turn out to be a diamond, you never know.
Martin comes and slides into our lineup and hits everything in sight. The NW is a lot tougher than than before and having Martin and Eager on a line together may make some noise on the forecheck.
Horcoff just recently built a house next to Katz, hes not going anywhere. In fact I could almost guarantee that he gets another contract after this one, anyone who thinks that Horcoff is going anywhere is delusional. It truly is disturbing to think that it is how the organization is operated.
If you ask me, this is an incredibly naive statement. It's like when someone is so afraid that something might happen, that they totally convince themselves that it will.
I don't doubt that the Oilers are Horcoff supporters, and I also don't doubt that they believe he's an important player. And just because buying him out under the current system may not be worth it to them, it doesn't mean they think it's a great deal and/or wouldn't buy him out if the rules were different.
There's an absolutely huge difference between liking a player and not being able to see that his contract doesn't come close to matching his contributions (and has another 2+ years on it). If they can buy him out without taking any cap penalty, then I have no doubts that they would. The way the contract was structured in the first place should be the first tell.
The fact that he now lives close to Katz is irrelevant.

The Islanders have no reason to do this, they have secondary offense coming through the ranks (Nino, Nelson, Strome) and they need grit just like we do, Martin also signed a club friendly contract not all that long ago.

I don't doubt that they value him as a person and even as a player to some extent, but like you've said it's about his worth relative to his cap, just because they'd entertain buying him out doesn't mean that they think that he can't play in the league anymore, it's because his contributions relative to his cap hit aren't worth the squeeze.

Haha yeah you gotta love proposal threads on HF. They generally render responses that are extremes to both sides. Like anythin the truth is in the middle.

It's a decentackage in terms of value but it still leaves us with an even larger void on the backend. We upgrade on C exponentially though. What about Pavelski? He's a little older and a little more expensive than Gagner, but he brings a lot of needed skills (faceoffs, PK). He shoots right, and has enough offence to play the 2C role effectively.

You have to give to get... Datsyuk is top 5 if not top 3 C in the league.
Getting him to shelter RNH and mentor Yakupov would be huge for this organization. Adding someone like him boosts us into playoffs contention. Something that would do wonders to the development of the 'big 5'.
Whitney is also a year away from UFA and many fans here seem to have written him off. Klefbom is a great prospect but a price is to be paid to acquire a great talent..
Guys like Gagner, Omark, Hemsky, Paajarvi are not really in our long term plans so IMO are trade bait.
Lowe hinted at becoming a contender and a declining DET might need to get premium for a player who is a year and a half away from free agency. Might be a win win for both clubs..
