I highly doubt that we could add the payroll to add those guys. It should be noted that a) if one of Bonifacio and Izturis is playing 2B every day, it should absolutely be Izturis and b) that people are forgetting how extreme Izturis's home-road splits have been (away from Angels stadium, he is nearly all-star calibre). There is also a reasonable chance that Bonifacio outperforms Melky this year (Fangraphs did an article on speed which essentially says that a guy with great speed (top 10 baserunner with high end defense because of his speed) will be an above average to all-star value player simply by being a replacement level hitter (see Bourn, Michael).

Really don't want this to get lost in the shuffle of the new thread, this was a very important nugget from JJ's agent posted by eyedea:

Quote:
I also found this little nugget by Matt Sosnick in Davidi's most recent SN article.
Quote:
Quote:
"The Blue Jays went from a four to an 8 in one day," said Matt Sosnick, the agent for right-hander Josh Johnson. "Players want to play for a winner. There’s an unknown going to Canada, but with one trade they’ve made it more attractive to the other 750 players in the major-leagues."
This trade didn't just bring us back into relevance in the AL East, but it brings back the respectability players had for the Jays from 20 years ago.
The view of the team around the States and the MLB in general is improved exponentially by the move, that may be the biggest part of all

Thursday or Friday. Olney said there's no precedence to overturn and it's extremely likely to be approved. No reason not to.

Anthopolous' aggressive timing with this move has to be applauded. It changes the state of play for free agency with almost the entire market still out there. May even open up managing options that wouldn't have been there before. Bold, smart move.

I can't wait for this to be finally approved so we could hear from AA and the new members of the team. I want to hear (hopefully) the excitement of these players.

I am trying to find the article I read the money that Reyes and Buehrle lose out on due to taxes and playing in Toronto is pretty insane. I think you can get a decent picture of why players don't want to sign here in free agency.

I'm so pumped for this! I just hope it ends up better than the last time the Jays spurged and got Burnett, Glaus and Ryan. That turned out disappointing, but this should be different. I really hope we grab a good LF and 2nd basemen, but even if this is it for the offseason (which it almost certainly isn't) I'd be very happy.

Any idea how much money is still to spend by Rogers? I feel like the O's are going to go for broke this season and we need to keep up.

Could we get a figure of the tax rates in New York, Boston and other large cities? I'd like to think there's not a major difference between them.

There is no state income tax in these nine states Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Ontario's tax rate is 29 % so that is a huge amount compared to any other US state.

Alabama: 5% on income over $3,000
Alaska: No income tax
Arizona: 4.54% on income over $150,000
Arkansas: 7% on income over $32,600
California:10.55% on income over $1 million
Colorado: flat 4.63% of federal taxable income
Connecticut: 6.5% on income over $500,000
District of Columbia: 8.5% on income over $40,000
Delaware: 6.95% on income over $60,000
Florida: No income tax
Georgia: 6% on income over $7,000
Hawaii: 11% on income over $200,000
Idaho: 7.8% on income over $26,418
Illinois: flat 3% of federal AGI with modifications
Indiana: flat 3.4% of federal AGI with modifications
Iowa: 8.98% on income over $63,315
Kansas: 6.45% on income over $30,000
Kentucky: 6% on income over $75,000
Louisiana: 6% on income over $50,000
Maine: 8.5% on income over $20,150
Maryland: 6.25% on income over $1 millio
Massachusetts: flat 5.3% on all income
Michigan: flat 4.35% of federal AGI with modifications
Minnesota: 7.85% on income over $74,780
Mississippi: 5% on income over $10,000
Missouri: 6% on income over $9,000
Montana: 6.9% on income over $15,400
Nebraska: 6.84% on income over $27,000
Nevada: no income tax
New Hampshire: 5% on interest and dividend income. Wages are not taxed.
New Jersey: 8.97% on income over $500,000
New Mexico: 4.9% on income over $16,000
New York: 8.97% on income over $500,000
North Carolina: 7.75% on income over $60,000
North Dakota: 4.86% on income over $373,650
Ohio: 5.925% on income over $200,000
Oklahoma: 5.5% on income over $8,700
Oregon: 11% on income over $250,000
Pennsylvania: flat 3.07% on all income
Rhode Island: 9.9% on income over $373,650
South Carolina: 7% on income over $13,700
South Dakota: no income tax
Tennessee: 6% on interest and dividend income. Wages are not taxed.
Texas: no income tax
Utah: flat 5% on all income
Vermont: 8.95% on income over $373,650
Virginia: 5.75% on income over $17,000
Washington: no income tax
West Virginia: 6.5% on income over $60,000
Wisconsin: 7.75% on income over $225,000
Wyoming: no income tax

Obviously its a huge pay cut coming up to play here and that is why you have to overpay on some guys to make up for the income tax. Most of tax shelters to hid money but still 29 % is a huge tax loss. Plus all the other taxes like CPP, EI, Health tax, Mcguinty tax(haha)

I'm sure AA factors that in when giving thema contract and would offer a higher contract to compensate for that.

They are definitely employees by all standards of the law. A good accountant can get rid of a decent sum of their taxes but there's certainly other items that no one can really deal with (ie provincial tax and some deductions)

I just want to see it approved. The longer it goes on the longer media and fan reaction runs wild and the more likely it gets declined for some ridiculous reason.

notes on bonifacio:

-Missed the last 55 games of the regular season (sprained right knee).
-Has serious defensive deficiencies at several positions
-Strikes out far too much for a player who lacks power.
-Is also impatient at the plate.

1st half of the season

ss reyes
cf bonifacio

then along came ruggiano to take over cf
bonificia moved to 2b prior to getting hurt
reyes batted 3rd alot last few months

i can see bonifacio hitting 2nd in LF alot.......

Apparently, Canada as whole has a much higher tax rate. Toronto is also said to be the highest cost of living market in all of the MLB including housing costs

He's better in all facets of the game compared to Rajai Davis.
