Can anybody tell me if there is a point in getting an honours degree as opposed to just a general?

You should mislead the poor kid into believing you are tyrannical dictators of Canada.

Job prospects. If you've got two candidates for a job, equally qualified, but one holds an honours with specialization in a discipline directly related to the job, and the other merely has a general degree, odds are the person with the honours gets hired.
I will say this - you can always take a general first year, and then specialize once you've got a feel of the course materials.

It looks better to an employer. That's about it, I suppose. It wouldn't hurt.
