Couldn't care less about stats, polls, HFboard experts, TSN, etc ...
Marty is by far the best goalie I've ever watched. He simply mesmerised me first time I've seen him play, during 2002 Olympics, and then just kept on doing it for next 10 years. Oh did I mention he is the sole reason I ever turned my hockey-eye towards New Jersey. The rest was history
And, my friends, I find that history by far more relevant, than one found in stats and "experts say" sections
Marty was a winning machine. Roy or Hasek didn't dominate the league in wins like Marty did for basically his entire career. And no, it was NOT because of the great defense that the Devils had. He kept up the wins even after the lockout.
Part of the reason we're one of the best teams for shots against is the arena statistician, who undercounts shots like Lou pays him to do it.
Well I still think we are one of the best in shots against. I think the puckhandling plays into that too. I remember more shots against when Moose played a lot of the time(Which boosted his save percentage) because he can't play the puck for ****.
Though they do undercount the shots though. I've watched games, and counted shots on goal counted, as opposed to what I saw not counted. After having season tickets for years, and going to every game, this last year I couldn't because I've moved. I've counted about 3 or 4 shots a game they are not counting for Marty. I've noticed they rob the visiting goalie too a little bit. Still 3 or 4 saves a game robbed is a lot. Not to mention a majority of years I've found Marty's road save percentage vs home save percentage much higher. Even in the same amount of games played.
Why do people hate on Marty? Because he's still playing. That's exactly why. He's still playing, therefor he can't possible be better then guys already retired.
That's how this board works...if you're a retired hall of famer, you're the greatest ever. If you're a future hall of famer but still playing, you're not even worthy to lick their boots. Garbage world.
I like how the people on the mainboard used Marty giving up 5 goals in the SCF game 6 this year as something to tarnish his legacy.
Obviously they're not old enough, or just not smart enough to remember game 1 of 2001 SCF where he gave up 5 goals. Though they cut that joke, choke artist Lulongomallow a break for giving up 8 goals in a SCF game last year, and his absolutely BRUTAL goaltending the whole entire series. Not to mention his Al Trautwig BRUTAL goaltending in the LA series where he lost his starting job to Schneider this year.
I won't join any club with people who cheer on a dirty team that deliberately attempts to hurt people every shift
Every shift is an overstatement, but you can't deny they have some players that often cross the line. I can accept making a hit and coming up high, it happens. Late hits, unnecessary slashing/punching, hits clearly taking advantage of players, etc., those are dirty. Rinaldo slewfooting ZP, Hartnell's episode at the end of the first period in that 6-4 win, Giroux's hit on Zubrus in game 4, and stuff like that is clearly dirty. Even in the AHL game, I saw Bourdon I think just punch Urbom in the face for no reason when Sestito and someone else were in a scrum.
Zubrus scored the one goal in game four I believe and then Hartnell just elbows him for no reason. It's that kind of stuff that gives the Flyers that label.
